I've seen people fight over top, and I don't get it.

Mid/Top lane are most fought over lanes.
I for one like a lot more top/mid laners than bottom champs.

I don't see a difference, though my friend suggests top when I play as Mordekaiser and it feels better than when I'm bot.

Top you get a solo lane. Bot you have to depend on the other person and you to do well. Most people prefer to solo and carry themselves.

Useless feature really. People either suck up or most dont really earn the badge.

I think what he means is it it is physically different. They look pretty identical, just flipped lanes, and i know where hes coming from when he says that. But yeah, there is a large difference. you want two people bot for dragon control, simple as that. Top lanes usually solo because you have a jungler and the baron buff usually isn't obtained until you're well in to the mid-late game.

Its really all for dragon control. Lane swaps are sometimes done to shut down a champion. The lane itself isn't THAT important, as long as you have presence.

this
it's only because of the map design and where everything is

Physically, yes, they are the same, just reversed. The meta (along with the dragon control like Jerian lolicon said) is the only thing that makes them different.

The reason the lanes are assigned the way they are is primarily for the convenience of trying to remove some of the randomness that you might have seen in bot games, where you get matched up in your lane against someone who is either does really poorly or you do really poorly against. In real games, if it was a coin flip to see who would be in your lane, you'd have to play a lot more conservatively.
Instead, since you have at least some idea of who will be in your lane, you can let yourself be subject to certain weaknesses that you might not have wanted to before.
Mid lane is usually an AP champion, because their main damage dealing spells tend to receive large, flat bonuses per level when compared to other characters, so for an AP champion, leveling up as fast as possible is more profitable than being safe with a lane-mate. Solo lanes give more exp, so AP goes mid.
Top lane is a weird lane. A lot of people can play there, as long as you synergize with your team. Bruisers and duelers are the most likely picks, but they don't have an ulterior motive to the lane like the other lanes do, so a lot of antics go on up top, and that's probably why you see people fighting for it.
Bot lane usually has the AD champion and their support. AD champions are pretty much the opposite of APs, in that they benefit the most from getting a lot of money. The safer they play, the better off they'll be, so they usually take the team's support as a laning partner to protect them while they get minion kills for gold.
