Obama on ‘The View’: Politicians and ‘Jersey Shore’

  President Barack Obama is receiving a fair amount of flack for flip-flopping on a very serious issue on today’s episode of “The View” – namely, whether or not he was aware of of the existence of one Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, of the MTV reality show “Jersey Shore.” During the program, the President said he did not know who Snooki was, though alert viewers and bloggers were quick to point out the President actually used Snooki in the punchline of a joke delivered at the White House Press Correspondents Dinner earlier in the year. (The joke: “This next provision is called the Jersey Shore-Up. It reads, ‘The following individuals shall be excluded from the indoor tanning tax within this bill: Snooki, JWOWW, The Situation and House minority leader John Boehner.’)
  
  And doesn’t pretty much everyone know that the second season of “Jersey Shore” kicks off tonight at 10 p.m. ET?
  
  Clearly, the leader of the free world has been misleading the public as to his “Jersey Shore” knowledge. But the president is not the only politician to have a connection to “Jersey Shore.” To wit:
  
  In December 2009, State Senator Joseph Vitale, Chairman of the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus, announced that the caucus sent a letter to Viacom demanding MTV pull “Jersey Shore” from the air.
  In June 2010, Senator John MCain tweeted at Snooki: “u r right, I would never tax your tanning bed! Pres Obama’s tax/spend policy is quite The Situation. but I do rec wearing sunscreen!”
  In July 2010, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said MTV’s Jersey Shore is a net “Negative for New Jersey. I mean, because what it does is takes a bunch of New Yorkers — most of the people on ‘Jersey Shore’ are New Yorkers … [and] drops them at the Jersey Shore, and tries to make Americans feel like this is New Jersey.”
  New York governor David Paterson responded: “Well maybe they are better when they’re in New York than they’re in New Jersey.”
  If it makes the administration feel any better, the “Jersey Shore” kids, for the most part, don’t seem to know who Vice President Joe Biden is.
