Has anyone ever played Dwarf Fortress? It's one of the games that inspired Notch on making Minecraft with the idea of a randomly generated world. It's been around since 2002.
It's the type of game where at first glance you notice how hard it is to learn, but once you get the grip, it's the most fun you can have in any possible game. There's no integrated graphics but only uses ASCII symbols for detailing, however it still processes a lot of memory because of how much happens at once.
There are two modes of gameplay: The recently added "Adventure Mode" lets you venture off by controlling a user generated hero in a random world, which if you die, your game gets erased (But the world is still saved). The other mode is called "Dwarf Fortress", it's the most played mode and the one meant to be played as the other mode is still in development.
You start the game by finding a location to embark and built upon in the world you created. The next step is setting characteristics to seven dwarfs, then you decide what they are good at, what type of profession they will have, and can even name them to however you like. There's no goal to the game but trying to build a fortress and survive. Knowing that it's a simulation, you set your own goal, which is mainly the fun part of it all.
