Erm... you can use a Jpeg, there's no major difference between PNG and JPEG.
PNG almost ALWAYS has better quality.
Example:

[Image: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r96/1love1riku1/png.png]
Look closely at the blue in both pictures.

.-. People who blindly say 'png! png!' is disturbing. I mean, they both have theirs uses.
Since png is lossless, it's good for small to medium images with few colors [like vectors]
Using .png for a high res color scan from a magazine [making stock images] isn't ideal. At sizes 1600px+ [or even less], file size is going to be inflated.
Might as well use jpg at that level, because the artifact level is not as high, and it's a given people will be resizing down.
You'll probably have 80% less of a file size too.
I mean, you're saying I can't use an image like
this just cause it's a jpg? I don't get that reasoning.

I'm talking about with STOCKS.
The only way to have a transparent background for stocks is to save as PNG.
JPEG keeps some ugly ass white background.

To what Paul was saying, the equivilant of the pen tool on Photoshop is the Wand tool in GIMP.
If you want, I can make a small signature tutorial that will help.
Also, Deviantart is where you want to search for brushes. GIMP now can use any brush format, so don't worry about that.
Also, the site I use for wonderful stocks is:
Planet Renders v4
They also have a forum so if you can't find a particular stock, you can request for somebody to render it for you.
A lil' tutorial will help :D, I'm getting the hang of it, but not really sure...Thanks guys for helping me :]~~!

o.0 Putting aside the fact that stock images should not have any transparency, and putting aside that gifs also preserve transparency.... Killing a white background is one of the easiest things to do in photoshop.
Anyway, render ≠stock

Thing is, sometimes there are traces of white sticking around the stock and then you have to erase them yourself. And by transparency, I mean that when you paste it onto a canvas to work around, do you want some white background you have to edit it out?

It really depends what kind of sig do you want, will it be just a pattern with text or do you have a particular picture in mind?
As for JPEG vs PNG its not that much of a difference, I'm quite content with jpeg
If you have photoshop and are really lazy just grab a couple brushes and layer it with a colour scheme in mind, noob but effective :D *runs away*

The way I was taught is simple: Find three random images, throw them onto a white background, twist them around, filterrape them, add blending options. Do so until you have a nice, abstract, unintelligible background. Then throw in a subject of whatever you like, add text, and a border if you choose, and you're done.

That's in paint.
I scribble some lines in photoshop and this is how they turn out.

JPEG

PNG

As you can see, the only difference is the background because jpg cannot produce a transparency.
