Since AT&T is probably the worst ISP I have ever had the displeasure to working with, I've decided to switch over to my only other option.. Verizon.
I signed up for an 8GB/mo data plan, but I don't know how much my gaming will eat up.
If it's too much, I'm going to have to kiss online gaming goodbye, but it's better than no internet at all.
This is kinda over estimating, but let's say I spend 10 hours a day gaming (which I don't, but my sister plays mmos, too) would I go over?

Are you going to be downloading the game files? If not and you already have them, the actual internet required to play games won't be much. I think 8GB/month would be suitable.

Yeah, it depends on the kind of game you're playing I guess. I can play Mabi all day and my data limit doesn't even go down 1%.
I play Minecraft multi-player and my data limit for the day is gone in like, an hour.

She's talking mainly about GW2, really.

You should be able to game fine, unfortunately you won't be able to download anything, because 8 GB would be like, 2 movies.

I don't have GW2, so I dunno. But as others have said, I would worry more about patch downwloads. Plus if you have to share your connection with others and they will stream youtube and whatnot in addition to it, 8GB is going to be painful.
So for network usage during gaming, you could try to figure out your usage using Resource Monitor while the game's playing. The Network tab lets you filter usage by program. Mabi uses around 200 bytes/sec, depending on what you're doing. There's a graph log that will let you figure out how usage looks like over time, so just do the math and you'll know about how much you'll use in a month.

As long as you don't youtube, browse good quality images (or upload too many, upload counts too) you should be fine. Just be careful of game updates, those will kill you. You might want to download manual patches somewhere else if the game supports that.
On days where I don't really "do anything" (meaning casual web browsing and skype text chat), my router's reports say I use about 150 - 300 MB / day.
The main thing to look out for is stuff you don't really think about.
If you have consoles connecting online, that's a lot of data there. If you have mobile devices that switch over to wifi instead of 3G.
Operating System updates that run in the background (for any devices not just PC).
And don't forget that upload usually counts towards your limit with most ISPs.
8GB really isn't a lot and likely is not meant for average PC users home network though, 8GB is a slightly "higher-end" plan for smartphone data here... and I'm in canada...

Last I checked 8 GB WAS verizon's high end smartphone plan. I'm assuming she's planning to use her phone to give her computer internet, because as far as I know Verizon's actual internet service goes way higher then 8 GB a month.

Actually, they have a 10GB plan...

Your sister is dumb.
I feel so bad for you.

Ouch. Verizon charges like, $2 or something for every MB you go over. 12 GB over...? I feel bad for your empty bank account.

I got her a car for Christmas, but I'll tell her I returned it to pay for the bill. (I won't really, but maybe she'll get the point)
