Now, to the point. What exactly is wrong with selling accounts? Why do games frown on it so much?
Lets say I've spent 10 years playing a game and spent thousands of dollars on it. Now I am tired of that game and want to move on to a new game but every time I think about just quitting the game and losing my thousands of dollars it makes me physically ill. So I want to get some of my money back.
Too bad. SELLING ACCOUNTS IS BADS.
This is basically the equivalent of me throwing away a car because I don't want it any more and I want to get a new one, but the state has banned the sale of cars. Why should they care what I do with it? They still got my time and money, I'm just trying to get back some of it so I can move on.
Keep in mind I've never sold an account on any game, I just don't see the problem with doing so.
Thoughts?

I don't personally see selling of accounts or even RMT (real money trading) as bad, it's the possibility of scamming that is bad (and extremely high) so I disapprove of it on that level.

this
I've sold my account before to a gold selling site
they made me give them my
username
password
email username
email password
both security questions
birthday
and first and last name
it took them about a week to verify all of the info was correct, but I got my money.
scamming is so high for that kind of thing though
"level 80 RS character for $50"
"oh okay *pays*"
"*gives info*"
"*changes it*

I think that's all the more reason that it should be allowed, so that it can be properly facilitated to take that risk away. The game company could set up a sort of auction page where people can list the accounts they want to sell and all the pertinent information, then people bid on the account they want. The game company takes the money, transfers it to the account owner, transfers the account to the one who won it.
Hell, they could even take a cut of the money as a 'tax' so that they still profit from it if that is their complaint.

The problem for the companies is that if everyone did this, fewer people would start accounts from scratch and therefore people wouldn't pay as much NX for pets, character rebirth cards, etc while they work on their character.

The companies don't want you to make money out of their products. I guess some kind of copyright infringement thing or whatever.
Some players don't like it because it allows someone to skip all the "hard" work, and just get to whatever.

Wish it was allowed since I have so much stuff I don't play anymore, and it's too much of a hassle to get it through to a buyer.

Yeeeeeeep.
If people are going to do something regardless of whether you allow them to or not, then you have to make it legal and regulate it. Much like cannabis and prostitution.

The only time I have ever been scammed/"hacked" was a real life situation.
Anyway, I'm not against account trading or RMT at all, but game companies want to maximize profits and all by keeping people on that treadmill. Some of them do allow such things and tax it to make money, but they're a minority, so meh.

Actually, I think one of the biggest issues with selling MMO accounts is the fact that you don't really own the account. In most game TOS the companies state that they are providing you a service and not a product. If it was a product, you would possess resale rights, but since it's a service that they are providing, you cannot resell the account, because legally you do not own it.
