Hi-ho! So I got my fabulous new laptop on Thursday...but it won't install updates through Windows Update.
According to Windows Update, there are 49 'important' updates. I can download them just fine, but when it asks for me to re-start to install them, when I do so my laptop says "Preparing Windows Update..." at the login screen, then at ~20% it says "Failed to configure Windows Update...reverting...," then it re-starts and when I log in again it leaves me back at "Windows needs to restart to install updates" blah blah.
I used their system fix tool it told me to download, and each time it supposedly fixes errors, but it still won't install updates.
Finally this morning, I managed to install like 2 updates, but only optional ones. All of these (important) updates are 'Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" and updates for really old versions of .NET framework. I don't really think i'm missing much, but it would be nice to try and fix this. :V

Are you installing all the updates at once? If so, and this may sound weird, but that could be the problem. My sister encountered this exact problem a couple months ago when she got her new laptop. We managed to work around this weird problem by time-consumingly installing each individual update one at a time. Weird thing is, through that method, all the updates were able to be installed. It's a suggestion you could try out.
Also, after installing each update manually, you do a restart to make sure it gets installed completely as well. Forgot to mention that as part of the process we did.

Ooh, i'll try the one-at-a-time approach. I'll let you know how that goes in just a minute!
Edit: Seems to be working so far! Thank you and Happy Holidays!

If that doesn't work, you can try to temporary disable some services and then attempting to update. You can do that by typing msconfig.exe into the "run" box. Going to the services tab, click disable all, restart computer, attempt to install, and then reenable all services and restart your computer.
