Looking to use something better than Windows Movie Maker but the $600 cost of Sony Vegas Pro is really putting me off right now as I just spent a lot this past month and need to cut back quite a bit.
Is there a cheaper option that is just as good that I can go with? Pirating is not an option btw, I refuse to do that so don't suggest it.
anyways, what other cheaper options would be decent and better than crappy Windows Movie Maker?

What I use is CyberLink PowerDirector, I find it similar to Vegas and easy to use.

That is quite a bit more affordable. $130 seems to be a solid option that isn't as off putting. Thanks, I shall take this one into consideration then.

If you need something simple and free, there's VirtualDub. If you wanna buy something, there's Adobe Premiere Elements, but I don't know much about it or how it compares with other paid video editing software.

Been editing videos for over 6 years.
While I've basically never used it, I would also recommend VirtualDub.

VirtualDub eh? I'll look into that as well.

If you need a basic program for your audio, I'd recommend
Audacity. It's free, and unless you're doing top-notch cinema quality, it'll be a big help if you need to record, cleanup, and fiddle with the audio for your clips.
Adobe Premiere Elements 11 is available for approx $99 (I think...), and I would definitely recommend it. Considering your purposes, it'll definitely be more than you need, and it's not
too hard to figure out how to use.

Audacity I already have and have been using for my audio already. I just need to find a better mic instead of relying on the webcam which will also be an investment. I guess $200 for a mic and adobe will be good enough.

You don't really need to spend $100 on a mic to get "good enough" quality. Almost anything will be a substantial upgrade over a basic webcam, so long as it's a proper, full sized microphone and maybe comes with some basic extras like a pop filter. Guess the extras are optional depending on what you're doing.

I haven't checked, but $30-$50 or less is probably just fine for a microphone.

What if it's a $80 webcam? Which was probably a waste unless I decided to place a vid of myself in the corner of the vid or something but I'll need a tripod cause the camera I got won't fit on this monitor that I have.
I think I'll spring for the software and mic in March or something.

Webcams are never good microphones. If you can get a physical microphone that's dedicated to being a microphone...
(as in, this)

...it's going to be leaps and bounds better than any of the crap that comes bundled with things made for multiple purposes in a remotely close price range, such as webcams, headsets, etc.
A $30 mic will offer better audio than an $80-100 webcam. This is because the physical construction of it is just inherently better at doing the job than anything that can be stuffed in another product. And most of the time, they don't even bother to put in something decent, as it's just an afterthought made to tick off another box in the checklist. This can be said with essentially all products with bundled audio, which is why headsets are terrible at being both headphones and microphones and monitors are terrible at being speakers.

I see, cheap mic it is then! Hmm...I guess my best bet for finding one is online as Best Buy doesn't seem to have any selection and retail stores also have crap selection last I checked. I do have a $50 Amazon gift card. I guess I can see what I can dig up there.
Could probably do the Mic right away and well I suppose I could just go for the video editing software while I'm at it and figure out how to use it.

My go to answer for most video editing questions is just to say "hey go here and hope the forums aren't closed to the public currently":
Something Awful Let's Play Tech Support (post full of guides)
There's a virtual dub tutorial in there too, which is helpful since, while powerful, vdub is kinda hard to get started with.
