Data Spikes?

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. You can not register, post or otherwise interact with the site other than browsing the content for historical purposes. The content is provided as-is, from the moment of the last backup taken of the database in 2019. Image and video embeds are disabled on purpose and represented textually since most of those links are dead.

We changed Internets to a plan that is faster but it still has data limits. Due to this and our desire not to get slammed with overages, I installed data meters on the computers that track how much data we are using.

I noticed that whenever I load/refresh a page the transfer rate skyrockets from 100-500 b/s to 27-100 kb/s. That may not sound like a lot, but when it happens for ~5-10 seconds every time I load or refresh a page it's eating through my data like a koala in a eucalyptus farm.

Is this normal for it to be splattering my data all over the place like that or is there something wrong that I need to fix? ;-;

Yes, it's normal. Every time you load a web page, you're actually downloading a HTML file and all the images and other stuff in it.

Well, I knew that. I just didn't expect it to jump to 9000x higher. And I didn't think it would do it every time I hit refresh even when nothing on the page has changed.

refresh requests the information again so it redownloads pretty much everything. Clicking to another page and then coming back to the same one by following links instead of doing a refresh will make more use of cache for things like images, but all the HTML/CSS tends to be redownloaded again. One thing you can do is disable signatures, probably half the content in a normal forum thread is signature images.

Actually, I think you still don't understand. xd You're not supposed to see any transfer when you're not loading pages, aside from idle connection control stuff for various programs, like IMs, Windows services, etc. When you load a web page, it acts as a file download--the rate will jump to as high as it can. For people with faster connections, it would jump even higher, until the page is downloaded. We can disregard any caching mechanisms for the purposes of this basic discussion. xd

So... in theory, not loading pages = 0 B/sec.
Loading any web page = as many B/sec (or KB/sec, or MB/sec) as possible, limited either by your max download speed or the web server's upload speed.

It does. Because as soon as I close minecraft it goes back down to 0 b/s as soon as I start playing again it goes back up to 500k/s and this is on a clean install with no mods or anything.

If you really want to save on your data usage while browsing nation, you can use the archive to read threads.

You have to access the normal version of the site to make posts, and you can't filter or search that way, but it would use less data, I think.
