In general for any game.
I personally cant start a game and not try out every class that seems interesting to me.
So are you like me, or do you make a decision for one character and stick to it?

I usually make the one that I like, and then after a while I make the others out of curiosity.

Yeah that's usually how I start out a game, too, except its usually like only 1 or 2 days after I start that I begin testing out all the others.
And yeah thats what my character screens usually look like. Games with like a 2 or 3 character cap are my worst enemy.

I make one, then I make another to do some random fun things with, and then I usually make a third one to do things right with and set myself a challenge with that character.
But then I get bored, play another MMO for some time, but Mabi always pulls me back along with Combat Arms.
Nexon might have horrible customer service, but their game envelope is better than any other F2P company, there is no denying that for me.
... hmm maybe I should try playing again today.

If it's a class-based game, it's likely i'll end up making one of every class, even the sub-classes, if it's possible. Gotta cap em' all, huhu.
If it's just a game you can go through with 1 character, then maybe 2-3 characters. If there are race differences involved in a game, then probably 1 of every race, I dunno.
Mabinogi's just the only different thing for me, because 9 alts with technically classless restrictions and such.

Depend on the game.

When there's games that have like multiple classes and sub classes and races, I just dont get how people can choose one and never look back. I would like, go insane if I had to choose just one.

I generally get bored of my first character halfway through the level cap of a game, then I create a new character to play with. Then the cycle repeats to the point where I usually never get to level cap with any of my characters.

I rarely play MMO's anymore and when I do, they are usually console based which don't have much overall content. I usually just stick with one character. Especially if the game allows you to change job/class, whether free or not.

It usually depends, I have the habit of reading upon everything about the game before actually playing it to make sure I know my builds. I don't really change characters until I cap, but if its a game where I can benefit from having some support (smith/alch/artisan) mule then I usually make some.
I just don't like changing characters at all until I've gathered the best gear q_q
[spoiler]
Also if its a game that just came out I can never change it cause MUST BE FIRST TO CAP LEVEL GOGO
THE COMPETITION

Yeah thats what sucks about playing tons of characters, is that I never become anything more than that noob who always dies a lot, because I dont have just one character to focus all my money and time on, and I cant really get skilled with a type of character, since I have so many.

I almost always only play one character, unless it's an FPS (or fighting game, etc), in which case I'll play nearly all of them based on which is most suitable at the time.

hmm on runescape I had one character since I could freely do everything with no restrictions whatsoever.
On trickster online, it was class base with gender lock. But depending on the skills you invested and your build.. you could make quite a few different character in the same class. The system had 4 main class, Power, Sence, Magic and Defence, each with eitheer a female and a male counterpart that had access to different skills and some similar skills. Because I just HATE playing males, I made 15 characters, 14 female and one male who looked like a girl. They were all very different than each others despite some been of the exact same character base. I also had a lot of fun going against the player design "Do-It-To-Win-The-Game" builds and still be very functionnal in the game.
in Grand chase, I mostly only played with Amy the Bard class character. But I was still effician with all the other class.
In Mabinogi, I came up to a current total of 15 characters, each different than the other in how they fight. While their level isn't all that high, togeter I get around 9850 lvls. I have a lot of fun with them and they teach me stuff people wouldn't learn by investing everything in one character only
