Hey guys, something not related to Mabinogi.
As readers probably know already, VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which is used by a lot of users to mask their connection without getting found out.
Recently, my college's IT department called me and my roommate over, and bitched about me tor-renting my anime and games. This kinda exposed me to my roommate's bitching as well, so we're not getting along either. But that aside... being the hardcore weeaboo I am, I just left that place and decided to never look back.
Which leads to my question. I plan on using a paid VPN. However, I am not sure that if I use even a paid VPN, if it's the school providing the internet service, would I be able to safely tor-rent my anime/games without being found out?
+Rep and Nation gold to anyone who could answer this question.
If it helps, I live in the US, in Philadelphia.
Before anyone says anything: I've tried using DDL links, and they SUCK. I'm barely getting 100kbs download speeds, and that's IF the link is even alive.
If worse comes to worst, I'm thinking of getting my own private internet connection. Would that be feasible in the dormitories?

in the cat's opinion, not safe
The way most college's internet works is that when you download
they receive info -> send to you
The data still goes through them
You should use VPNs with your own private internet
sharing an apartment with people cheaper than dorms most of the time
but you have to share :V

They will still see how much data you are transferring since no matter what you do it will pass through their network equipment. Also, you need to be sure the VPN is for all your traffic, not just http.
A lot of people will vpn/proxy their web browsing, but leave their DNS queries in clear text all the way for everyone to know what they requested.
I'd say if your paid VPN offers some kind of client that will pass all your network traffic over the VPN, it's worth trying out. Otherwise you'd need to do a lot of extra steps to get it working right.

I really appreciate the advice, guys. Thanks!
Which leads me to the next question. Is it feasible to get my own internet connection in a college dormitory?
(I actually plan on dorming at least for the next fiscal year, but if this means I can't watch my anime/play my games, I'm not sure if I'm willing to stay)

You'd have to talk to whoever is in charge of your dorm for that. I'd say there's no real technical limitation since a dorm is a building like any other, but there might be lots of red tape with the school itself.

Usually schools don't allow you to use your own internet because they'd rather just have 1 source of internet than hundreds.
They also would assume you're making them pay for it and not yourself, so then they'd say a big N-O.
There's also the fact they already know you're torrenting anime and games, so then you could easily be reported to the police for doing such things.
It'd be easier and cheaper to just get your own apartment and internet there instead of at the school.
Or you could always stop torrenting anime and just watch it on crunchyroll or animefreak.
Heck, you could even get a verizon/t-mobile phone and get a data plan with them...but it's up to you.

Yes, VPNs will protect you from watchers. Because you're connecting to the VPN and not them, they cannot intercept what you're connecting to but can instead only intercept that you're transferring data with a VPN (which is useless unless they run the anime site or get court orders, and even then enough of a pain in the ass they'll never bother). The only way they can possibly get you is if they somehow get the data while it's coming back to you after decrypting it.
However, if you've already been caught and you continue sending a lot of data over a VPN, they'll probably get mad anyway unless they're incompetent.
I'll PM you some things that I think you'll find helpful.

Getting your own connection was allowed at the school I studied in. I believe quite a few students got cable, since the res net sucked due to everyone... torrenting. >_>; If you've got a phone line in there, it may be possible to get DSL through that as well. Call the ISP to check if it's available--if it is, I doubt the school will mind if you were to install it.

All depends on the school, i was in an engineering school, where we were forced to use a single net, THEY KNEW WHAT WE WOULD DO WITH THE NET, someone hosted terabyte servers on the net that had all of the geek shows on it, was great, this was back in 2005 though, and the dorms were expensive but the internet was top quality.
Was nice when the entire floor was invited to anime showings and movies that just was released in japan.
Nowadays... I would have to ask.
