Generally speaking, since you'll be taking pictures of a book, I think it's safe to assume that you'll be able to control the lighting environment to make sure there's a lot of light. In that case, any decent compact (like say, from the Canon PowerShot series which go for like $200) should be able to get a pretty good, low noise image.

I wouldn't get something like that, though, since it would be crappy for photography in general.

Cameras usually aren't up to the task unless you stretch your budget far. You'll either have to destroy the bindings or go up in the 200+ range.
