Well luckily for me, FedEx's HQ is in my town, so I'll never need USPS.
FedEx is barred from mailing a lot of things, only the USPS can use mailboxes for instance. Also letters are cheaper to send via the USPS.
Also fedex does not mail animals. The USPS does, they get a LOT of shipments of chicks.
Every day i hear chicks chirping near the dock.
Not to mention netflix! Netflix mailing is incredibly cheap due to a deal with the USPS, also political mail is a big thing too. There is a lot of things people dont really understand about the postal service.
Well, the USPS supposedly doesn't run on taxpayer money. They run on their own revenue. So I really don't see the problem here; US Congress is pretty retarded right now--quite literally in fact.
I use USPS a lot, because they have the cheapest (sometimes only) international mail for packages. Not all the overseas retailers support Fed EX, and even then they're more expensive if it is available. So if you're like me and buy a lot of crap from Japan, USPS is pretty useful. Also, something a lot of people don't take into account is that physical mail is most of the time the preferred way that business communicate sensitive information. So even in an age where we have email they have their purpose.
Them taking away Saturday mail would suck though. What exactly is their motivation in doing this though? I would think they'd want more people to pay to get things delivered quickly...
