http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/02/08-1/there-is-a-new-petition-to-name-a-nebula-after-ultimate-madoka
CR News previously reported the discovery of the NGC 6357 nebula(pictured below), and many people are now convinced that it is a physical representation of Madoka Kaname from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and now they believe it needs to be named after her. Here is the page for the petition to name the nebula as the "Madokami Nebula".

And signed. Totally worth it, even if we can't actually see the nebula's shape without a powerful telescope. D:

Isn't this just a waste of time as nebulae aren't "named" they're just given scientific names based on certain criteria? Like the ones that are referred to by another name are just nicknames?

Actually, lots of nebulae have common names.
Scientific names are used because we will exhaust our entire language 17 times over naming less than 1% of observable nebulae.

Makes sense to me. Most nebula are named after what they resemble. The Horsehead nebula, for instance, looks like a horse's head.

So now that I've actually seen Madoka Magica, I have to say, naming a nebula after her is extremely fitting. I totally just signed this.
