and as an added bonus, decided to spice it up with doing Direwolf20's mod pack and following along his let's play to get a feel for the mods cause holy crap, there's so many and I have no idea what most of them do :imdead:
I know how EE3 and Thaumcraft3 works and am familiar with buildcraft/railcraft/ic2 for the most part but totally clueless on Forestry and their fancy bees and what not and all the fancy things in steve carts. Also seems to come with Portal gun and Gravity gun. Apparantly portal gun has a feature where you can open a portal on the moon even :whoops:
Anyways, what's your guys thoughts on Feed the Beast and your favorite mod in that bundle?

Mods are starting to become a bit quicker at updating recently by the looks of things. But I guess that really depends on how active the mod creators are. Some mod creators are very active while others are rarely around.

It's hard picking favourites :( RedPower2, love Sorting Machines and Managers.
Railcraft, Steam Boilers and Iron Tanks are awesome. (Boilers, best source of MJ in FTB).
ThermalExpansion, probably my most favourite mod, especially love Tesseracts.
Factorization, Barrels are awesome. Can't forget Steves Carts either, so much better for setting up tree farms.
I wouldn't suggest using using the Portal Gun on the moon xD Portal Guns used to be pretty cheap, now you require a Nether Star for one of its components.
Edit: I suggest subscribing to the Feed the Beast subreddit on reddit, good source of info. Tutorials, upcoming changes, and just general help.

Might have to try that and I saw the Portal Gun moon thing to know how easy it is to get sucked in and die. Could be useful for exposing ore though.
A lot of the mods are requiring the Nether Star by the looks of it. Thaumcraft 3 requires it for a couple things. I saw direwolf20 setup a wither skele farm using Computercraft Turtles and Soul Shards mod to make a wither skele spawner. By the end of the episode he had collected like 9 of them. Barrels are a HUGE inv saver. More so then Iron chests.
I just got to figure out a safer way to kill the wither. I'll have to keep up with direwolf20's let's play to see what he comes up with.

Reading around the wiki and watching direwolf's videos are the best way to to learn the mod for sure. Make sure to watch his SMP (this has a few mods that are in beta testing such as Xycraft machines) since it gives a lot of info along with his single player world. I've been playing for around 2 months so you can ask any questions about certain items/blocks etc if you have them.
I've done about half of IC2, almost all of Thermal Expansion, buildcraft, forestry. The only mods I didnt really get into are redpower2 and railcraft/traincraft. If you started FTB yesterday, they just updated and removed the old forestry machines so you'll have to use the new multiblock farms they added (which are worse imo). Watch direwolf's newest forestry spotlight and he gives a full tutorial (as well as any other mod in the pack).
If you think barrels are amazing wait until you can upgrade them. 1024 stacks of a single item in 1 barrel.

Good thing I'm following along with direwolf's let's play series where he hasn't gotten into forestry then. Currently working on ore processing and diamond hunting.
still not happy with the rate of turning cobble to stone bricks atm as well as processing all my other ores.

Yeah playing FTB for the first time can be overwhelming at the very least... it's better to use the FTB launcher to disable a few mods and start off playing a play through of 2-3 mods firsts well crafting mods at least like build craft thaum and red power for instance or Forestry Build and thaum
i spent over 40 hrs playing with the mods and still only get maybe 45% of them all lol (doesn't help they added red power thaum and red power 2... in like 2 months ago)

I wouldnt recommend disabling mods... just use NEI to look through and find soemthing that looks/sounds itneresting to you and google/wiki/youtube tutorials or explanations on that item. The problem with disabling mods is they're almost all compatible with each other and there are certain items that work better than the original mod. Like Thermal Expansion Liquiducts are WAY better than buildcraft waterproof pipes. Same for Energy conduits > conductive piping.

Why is portal gun mod trolly? It's really really useful (and borderline op imo).

It's not really a good reason though since so many things in the modpack are OP (Quarry, Tesseract for example) and just removing the Portal gun mod because of 1-2 op features of it is kinda a stupid idea. The mod is fairly fun with the turrets and Aerial faith plates. And moving spawners isnt THAT op because of the soul shards mod.

Well the Portal Gun to be fair is rather expensive to craft with the whole nether star. It does provide some fun warping around. It's more fun to use in a Portal environment. Also gravity gun also looks fun. Especially for misplacing glass or playing around with mobs.

You can find the portal gun in dungeons, and according to people it isnt very rare either. 3 people on a server I joined a few days ago have found one on the first day. If they removed it as a dungeon drop I'd be ok since it's an endgame item anyways.
