If you read the manga skip brotherhood and watch the first animated FMA.
Full Metal Panic...that's just something different.
IMO the first animated FMA that aired ended better.
Brotherhood and I don't get along. Probably because I tend to hate anime that follow the manga. I'm more than interested in seeing an alternate plot and or ending for a series.

Watch the first, then brotherhood.
If you have netflix they have every single episode of the first run.
Or you know, find a website that hosts it for free.

Except that in the original anime
Edward
does not get the girl. Seriously, that sucked.
I would still recommend watching the original anime first, then watch Brotherhood starting from episode 14 or so, since the two are identical up to that point. See both versions, then make your own judgement.
Full Metal Panic is a mecha anime or something.

I see your point however
not getting the girl
as opposed to the hero getting every thing he wants like a spoiled brat seems to be a little better.
Maybe because there are too many happy endings and not enough horribly depressing but amazingly poetic and well executed endings .
Not that the ending of the first FMA was like that but yeah. To me it just had an overall better ending that made it impress me.
That or this is all the J.D. talking.
Think of it like Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2. You the hero do everything right however
in the end you still die and you don't get your woman.
Or like in Dust in Elysian tail where no matter when you (the hero) does something right the harsh reality of being too late kicks(And no it doesn't happen all the time.)
in and the person you had to save dies leaving a widow and child
(Far from the actual ending. This is in chapter 2). Honestly made the game feel a little realistic despite having all its odd features.

I see your point, and I don't always object to such things,
In the case of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, for instance
but in the case of FMA, I didn't see it as amazingly poetic so much as contrived.
I think Edward giving up his alchemy is more poetic than arbitrarily deciding that an alternate dimension needs him more than Winrey does.
Also, Brotherhood has Olivier Mira Armstrong, who is the most badass character of either series, bar none.

Maybe I should say it again
"Not that the ending of the first FMA was like that but yeah."
I wasn't implying it was but if that was unclear I'm sorry.
But I can see your point as well and Oh damn that spider is still in the window...
Er
Anyway I just felt like FMA:B came along and took a huge massive shat on FMA for me probably because I never read the manga, and I still haven't because from what I can gather FMA:B follows it hand in hand.
I'm not saying I hated FMA:B there were somethings I found amusing and there were other things I liked as well. Like the second version Greed and the introduction of foreigners who used alchemy much differently.

I never read the manga either, and I think each series is good in its own unique ways, but as far as how everything was finally resolved, I definitely preferred Brotherhood.

Watch Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It follows the original series, which means it doesn't have to come up with its own storyline after it catches up to the manga (most animes that do this end up horribly). You could also try the manga instead, it's pretty amazing.

Don't even watch the first one. Its trash.
Get to watching brotherhood. One of the best animes of all time.

Most do, but Full metal Alchemist pulls it off quite well. I recommend seeing both.

I recommend seeing both aswell, I watched the first FMA without knowing the difference, it was pretty awesome, I watched brotherhood sometime later, when I was watching it I remember thinking some things only were enjoyable or made sense towards the beginning because I watched the other series. From what Ive read some aspects of brotherhood were not redone due to them already being covered in the first version, theres a reference to events in brotherhood in a flashback that never happened in that show, however, if you watch the first series theres an actual episode that covers that event.
Its worth it to watch both IF you watch the original first. If you are going in blind, and have no opinions on the matter ahead of time, its fun to see how the different shows interpret the characters.
