Despite Nixon's involvement in prolonging the Vietnam War, remember that it was a collective failure of American politics.
If you want to read about this instead, here's the BBC article that was written earlier this month.

They faked the battleship incident to start the war in the first place no? If the war still has purpose why shouldn't they prolong it intentionally?

That was 1964
These tapes are in 1968 when the United States is deeply involved in the Vietnam war and it's the election that Nixon is running for President.
Americans weren't even involved in the ground wars until 1965. The amount of troops started out at 3,000 and went up to 200,000 in less than a year.
Over the course of a few years, people didn't like that American troops are doing badly and are dying just to fight against Communism in a third world country.
Lyndon Johnson received a terrible reputation which is bad because the Democrats want to win this election. He promised the war will end but the talks were unsuccessful. He received the blame. History judged him to be an unsuccessful and incompetent President.

All true, but I didn't say Nixon started the war. I simply point out in the political environment, if they are willing to start a war by intentionally sink their own ship, it's no surprise they'd be willing to prolong the war.
