So basically, my Mcafee thing that came with my laptop expired just as I went to scan. Derp. But Mcafee was crap and never did anything anyway.
The antivirus i've been relying on so far (in combination with mcafee) is Spybot S&D, and it seems to be doing a pretty good job. However, i'd like some other opinions on it and what else would be good to use.
My budget is 0, if that makes a difference.
But from what i've heard, any of the big paying subscription ones (Mcafee, Norton, AVG) are pretty lame, so...

I use AVG Free and I've never had an issue with anything. You don't have to pay for good Antivirus.

What's AVG free? I thought it was subscription based.

It all depends on what you actually want and prefer. I don't need the other crap, I just need something to look out for my computer.

The other crap actually sounds like it would lag my computer really badly.

Don't install more than one Antivirus or they'll conflict with each other and spiral your computer into hell.
I recommend MSE, I've had no problems with it. I used to use AVG, and Avast! But both of them would block certain games and it just got annoying to unblock them etc.

I've always used and advised AVG's free version. Over five years and it's never really let me down~

I recommend avast, komodo or avg. All are free. Honestly, the best antivirus software is the free stuff you find on the internet.
Edit: Also, if you want a powerful scanning tool, get Malwarebytes, also free.

Just go with MSE. It's very light weight, doesn't have any useless bells and whistles, does exactly what it needs to.
You don't gain anything by paying for an anti-virus on a PC, unless you're a corporation and need centralized management.

Avast has a 2nd line of defense mode, but I'd say just go pure Avast given it's track record.
