The story begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. The Human Galactic Alliance has been constantly fighting for its survival against a grotesque race of beings called Hideous. During an intense battle, the young lieutenant Red and his humanoid mobile weapon Chamber are swallowed up into a distortion of time and space. Waking from his artificially induced hybernation, Red realises that he has arrived on Earth, the planet on the lost frontier. On this planet that was completely flooded by the seas, people live in fleets of giant ships, salvaging relics from the seas' depths in order to survive. Red arrives on one of the fleets called Gargantia. With no knowledge of the planet's history or culture, he is forced to live alongside Amy, a 15-year-old girl who serves as a messenger aboard the Gargantia fleet. To Red, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him.

Character design by Hanaharu Naruko who mostly does hentai manga. Directed by Gen Urobuchi (Madoka, Fate/Zero, Psycho Pass).
One of the many hyped shows for this season.
Love the usage of colors. First half was a bore. Second half was great. Hate the mecha designs. Love the character designs.

Agreed on both points. I was actually going to not watch this show because the mech seemed lame. The first part was really cool, but, they tried too hard with all the techno-babble and there was so much on screen at once, sometimes too much. The Hideous look awesome though, giant mollusks and space flowers in space, it feels so old school, but fresh at the same time.
As for the situation the protag is in, I think there's a lot of potential here. Can't wait to see where they go with it and what will become of the protagonist.

Watching it because of Gen (Psycho Pass was brilliant).
The space battles were a bit disorienting, but the second half makes up for it.

They should have hentai artists design characters more often, because I think the designs are great.
From the first episode and bits and pieces of the second ep, I can tell this is gonna be among my favorites for this season. This season is filled with a ton of good shows in my book.

Not to derail the discussion or anything... But a lot of hentai artists do end up going to do non-H related stuff. Type Moon (Tsukihime, Fate/Night Stay) started as a doujin circle, and Bow Ditama (Mahoromatic and KissxSis ) was doing H stuff way before he did those series, and the same for Oh!Great (Air Gear) and Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell) just to name a few.
But yes... This season is filled with great shows. I get a kind of Star Ocean vibe from Gargantia, human from a hyper advanced civilization ends up on a habitable world inhabited by more primitive humans.

Magaka artists for Azumanga, Medaka Box, Black Lagoon, Hentai Ouji, Railgun, Highschool of the Dead are some others.
Gargantia is one of my favorites of the season. That mech is so overpowered.

Surprised there's no more comments, but I have to agree- in fact, this might be the top anime this season for me. Have to watch Henneko to decide. Only so little people here watching it?

It does seem nice, but I'm not quite sure yet. Depends on what route they take.

I'm actually watching Henneko too. This season is great.
So who watched Gargantia ep2? Started out pretty uneventfully, but, when Ledo went and steamrolled those pirates so easily, I can see they're setting up for some drama with the crew, they all seem more frightened of Chamber's power more so than relieved he just saved them.
Also, I laughed when the pirates got vaporized star trek style like they'd just been beamed up/down somewhere.

Really liking this series so far, probably because of the setting.

So they don't like him killing but are perfectly fine firing upon the pirates themselves?

Doesn't make a lick of sense. They just had to pull this kind of crap.

It's the same debate we have in the world: ethics of fighting methods in wars.
It may seem like a silly argument that doesn't make sense, but that's how many things go.
