Seeing as I am coming close to my 3rd year of college(out of 5, second major added about a year) I thought it would be nice to start compiling a collection of good work or, to be more precise, become good enough to actually make the work. I want to be a game developer and have spent the last 2 years taking gen Ed's and as many programming and art classes as I could that applied to my majors.
Should I tailor my portfolio projects to be a game I programmed and drew myself? I have a good enough grip with creating artwork and programming in a few languages that I think I could, over the next year, flesh out a nice game that, while not being revolutionary, would show my programing knowledge as well as design skills and hopefully be fun to play.
Or should I instead just do some smaller, easier games/programs. What do people look for in portfollios of work, quality or quantity or both?
This would be for me as much as prospective employees. I want to test my limits and practice more, what better way than to do something that not only requires hard work but would also be enjoyable.
