It almost sounds like the 3D will be required to solve the puzzles effectively. I'm not sure I like the 3D models, but it looks pretty good otherwise.

It is a brand new original. It just takes place in the same timeline.
Think of it like Oracle of Seasons/Ages, or like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. They're different games that take place in the same timeline.
