Hey guys. About a week ago I asked in
this thread for some feedback on what we should do with spam. I didn't get as much as I wanted out of everyone, but it was enough for me to get a better understanding of the changes we need to make.
In short though, there really isn't too much to be changed. We'll be defining spam just a little bit and enforcing spam clean up a bit.
All descriptions of spam included here (except for the last one) do not apply towards Bean Rua. Remember that Bean Rua is an off-topic board intended for users to share small content and play around in. If you want to have a nonspammy conversation, we have the Everything Else section.
Spammy posts now include:
- Image only responses. If you post an image an accompaniment of a written post to help better depict your message, that is great. But image-only is a no-go. This includes memes and images with words in it. You still have to say something to contribute to the thread.
- Echo/parroting/agreement posts. You can't quote a post above you and simply say "this", "QFT", or "^". This will be considered spam. You should add your own input or reaction for the post to have substance.
- Being off topic isn't technically spam. It is natural that off topic derailing will occur in threads. A little bit is fine, but if it begins to track off on its own discussion, a staff will ask that you get back on topic. You can start a brand new thread for it, but if you continue the discussion in the current thread, you will be considered spamming.
- Posting too many threads in a short amount of time (example, 5+ threads within a few hours) can be seen as blatantly spammy in nature, even if they are on topic with the board category. This will actually be handled by a reminder to slow down. We'll be asking you to withold on making new threads for the rest of the day. Further threads made afterwards will be considered spam. This applies to bean rua as well.
As usual, these changes are not final and are subject to change. If you guys are fine with this, then I'll be making a spam guideline later to sticky.

I'm on the fence about this one, especially if the threads are on-topic. It's a "soft" thread limit, which I was never a fan of from the discussion.
Though I guess it won't amount to any significant changes, like you said. Just have to see how it plays out.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I'm not a huge fan of it either, but the likelihood of this one even getting enforced in the first place is very low. Most people aren't going to post 5+ threads in the span of a few hours, and even if they do the staff are not going to notice it until someone reports it for whatever reason.
You can make more threads tomorrow, and if you really have something important you want to share, heck we'll post it for you.
Its more of a safeguard for when someone goes on a thread spree and is visibly disturbing other members.

Fair enough.

I'm okay with this. This is more or less what I had mentioned in that thread for results.

Almost read that last one as "posting in too many threads..."

The first 3 seem a bit too strict imo.
Image only post are all in good fun and can sometimes still deliver a message or a point without typing any actual words in "kinda like what political cartoons". Just as long as the images are not being used to troll another poster then I see no problem in allowing people to do this.
Echoing also gives people clear picture that multiple that they are not the only person who thinks or believes that what they said is correct.
Its pretty much like saying " I Agree with this post." If you guys are going to take that away from people why not add a like function or thumbs up thing for people who want to agree with said post and make it aware to other people that they agree with that post without having to write out the exact same thing.
The last one seems a bit bleh, I think that jumping into a thread and talking about a completely different subject at random should be a nono but if the thread naturally turns into a conversation about another thing because the conversation naturally steered that way then I feel like that should not be considered spam.

I don't see a problem with these guidelines, yet. However, I think the last one might pose a problem for some eventful members that make several different threads a day, even in Bean Rua. If Bean Rua is the official off-topic forum, and you get no gold/post count, I don't think several threads made by the same person would be really spammy. Of course, this is a little iffy, because if for example someone makes several threads about stupid things that no one cares about and continues making more, that can be, arguably, being spammy.
I'm also sad I missed that first thread last week. My inactivity is a karma >:l

I completely disagree with this. besides it only limites a person from making more than 5 threads per hour. A person could still make more threads after the hour is up. If anything I feel like it should be stricter but meh.

Oh hours :( I read that as days LMAO, curse my vision! I think that's fine and I'm completely okay, I think there needs to be a little discussion on what the limit should be though.

I think if the picture if actually meaningful like the one you posted, it's fine because in that case, it would actually contribute to the topic as it's just a picture quote, not some random meme.
It's really no different from any other quote, either. And you could always add 'I thought this summed up my feelings on the topic' or something.

Where the hell were you guys when the discussion was going on last week.
Now we need to have the discussion all over again.

What thread last week?
I like the forums for the freedom it gives but I still feel like it should have at least some limitations that we can all agree on. I feel like you guys added a crap ton of ban hammers on the spam detection machine you guys had but designed to hit everything but the main reason why people wanted you guys to make stricter spam rules on Mabination.
