Have you ever heard the term "You need money to make money."? In the real world, where everything you own costs money, this is mostly true. However, this isn't the real world, this is Mabinogi dammit, and there is a very profitable, and often overlooked way of making some quick and easy gold if you're willing to be patient.
Now that Nexon has announced they are making inv+ free it will make it a lot easier for newbies, and players in general to make some spare gold.
Now, if you're too low pf a level to run profitable dungeons/shadow/threater missions on your own and don't have a dungeon running buddy, or like me and your primary purpose in the game is to be a merchant, then you might find some of what I have to say useful.
What are part-time jobs? (PTJ)
When you run a business all on your own (especially since NPCs seem to work 24/7), you don't really have time to run off and do errands. This is where you come in, when you talk to an NPC you will have to options to start a conversation with them. You've probably already noticed this while running off and doing quests and what not, but just in case you forgot:
When you start a conversation you will notice a book on the right hand side of the screen with a lot of options to choose from. Most of these are useless, and unless you use some of these keywords on a certain NPC, they are useless. Well, except one! Part-time jobs!
Kindly select that and you will be prompted to select "Accept" and "Decline"
Make sure to read the details so you know exactly what you need to do. If for whatever reason you missed it or forgot, you can simply press "Q" and go over to the "Normal" tab to check.
So, what do you do now? We're getting to that!
Tasks
NPCs have an assortment of tasks you can do, unfortunately, you don't really have a choice on what they want you to do on any given day.
Since there are so many, instead of typing them all here I will give you this link, which has a list of NPCs and when you go to their wiki page it will give every task.
For now I will give you a list of the two NPCs in the most profitable area, Dunbarton.
Dunbarton's church NPC is Kristell
There are three possible things she can assign for you to do
-Gather Apples
-Gather Eggs or
-Gather Potatoes
Like I mentioned before, you do not get to pick, and changing channels does not change what job you will get.
Here is where you can find each other these items.
Red: Apples
Green: Potatoes
Orange: Eggs
How to gather apples:
Apple trees are hard to mistake, they're most noticeable features are the err apples.. and they are relatively shorter than the other trees in the area.
To get an apple take your cursor and hover over the trunk of the tree. See that fist? Good, now start clicking. I highly suggest you bring stamina potions (which can be bought at the healer's house) and summon your pet (you should have received both a thoroughbred and a eagle). As long as both of you have enough stamina, you both can hit the tree, which doubles your chance of getting apples. Don't expect to get apples right away, branches, which are useless, and gems, which are also useless, may drop, don't bother picking them up.
If berries drop, you're at the wrong type of tree.
(note: apples are not stackable, so they take up more inventory room than potatoes or eggs)
How to gather potatoes:
For this you need a weeding hoe, you can buy them at almost any weapon shop for around 320 gold (chump change). I recommend keeping the same hoe for reasons I will explain later.
Head over to one of the potato fields on the map and look for a green sprout on the group with a weeding hoe in your right hand.
If you hover over the sprout with your cursor you will see it change to the shape of a hoe, now's your time to click. Failures will happen, you have a certain percent chance of receiving a potato (which, sadly, I do not know) depending on your hoeing rank.
(note: potatoes stack in 10s, and each sprout has 5 potatoes each)
How to gather eggs:
For this you will need both hands free.
Like before, hover your cursor over the chicken and it should turn into an egg, time to click.
This has a 100% success rate as long as the chicken has eggs and doesn't move.
(notes: there can be up to 5 eggs per stack, and each chicken has 5 eggs but they regenerate one egg every 8? seconds)
WARNING:
ALL OF YOUR EGGS WILL BREAK IF YOU ARE KNOCKED BACK IN COMBAT
The best way to avoid this is storing them in a pet that you will not summon for combat or avoiding combat while doing part-time jobs.
Dunbarton's Grocery Store NPC
Dunbarton's Grocery Store NPC is Glenis
The possible tasks she can give you is:
-Gather Berries
-Gather bottles of Milk
-Deliver Chunk of Meat to Manus
-Deliver Piece of Cake to Aeira
-Deliver Lump of Cheese to Nerys
Luckily for you you have 3/5ths of a chance to receive a delivery task, which are the easiest and quickest jobs.
Where the delivery NPCs are located:
Purple: Aeira
Green: Nerys
Blue: Manus
It's as simple as running over, giving them their item, and running back.
The best part is your NPC will give you the items you need to deliver.
How to Gather milk:
You can find cows here:
Glenis will give you 5 empty bottles (you can not use the ones bought from the general store)
You need to equip one at a time and click on a cow, once again, this is a 100% success rate as long as the cow has milk and doesn't move.
How to gather berries:
Almost any tree will give you berries if you keep hitting them (this excludes apple trees) but the trees near the town square should word just fine.
The same as earlier, it's best to bring what? Stamina potions and summon a pet. Very good.
(note: berries are stackable and can be stacked up to 5)
Guysssssssss I said not to reply yet. :(
Oh well xD
What are the rewards and why are they important?
Each NPC is different, and has different things for you to do. However not all NPCs are profitable.
Holy Water (HW)
Church NPCs always give at least 4 holy water (or more if you're at intermediate of advanced, but we'll get to that later), which is a very important item in the game for repairs, enchantment, and to keep weapons and clothing from losing durability quickly, and luckily for you, a lot of people are too lazy to go out and get it themselves and will buy them from other players. Since everyone needs holy water, it's quite easy to sell.
Grocery PTJs
There are currently 3 Grocery NPCs in Mabinogi, but only 2 will give you the items you're looking for. What are they? Homestead Seeds!
People are quite eager to get their homestead level capped because it makes ranking certain life skills a hell of a lot easier, plus they're pretty cool looking. Homestead seeds are in high demand and because they're probably the main thing you'll be using to level up homesteads, and because Caitlin and Glenis (the only NPCs that give homestead seeds as a reward) only give 2 per part-time job, it's much easier to just buy them outright.
(note: the seeds will not appear on the reward list, but they are given no matter what reward you choose)
Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Part-time Jobs:
Once you complete a job a certain amount of times the difficulty will change, but this isn't a bad thing, the more difficult the PTJ the more rewards you get. (This is only profitable through holy water, though, since grocery ptjs always give you 2 seeds)
-Basic - Complete 0 ~ 50 times successfully. (4 Holy water per job)
-Intermediate Complete 51 ~ 100 times successfully and success rate ≥ 93% (6 holy water per job)
-Advanced Complete ≥ 101 times successfully and success rate ≥ 92% (10 holy water per job)
You can check this by pressing "C" and going over to the part time job tab and looking under "Church Part-time Job"
Selling your goods:
Unless you can get a loan from another player or were around for an event that gave a bag, you're going to have to save up for a bag
Now, there are some expensive bags, but I suggest not buying them until you're financially stable, the only difference is a small size difference and they're prettier.
The cheapest bag is 37,500g but 7x5. I highly recommend going with a bag that has both even numbers, like the Item Bag (44) for 49,800g or Item Bag (8x6) for 37,500g. All basic bags are sold by every general store npc.
If you do not have and cannot afford a bag
you will need to do it the old fashion way, with dungeon party windows open.
Press "P" to open the party window and make sure to tick dungeon and type what you are selling.
Each line has a small character limit so if you get cut off, even mid word, just go onto the next line. Try to keep it short, sweet and to the point.
"What's the difference between regular and dungeon?"
Regular parties do not stay up for very long, dungeon parties stay up for 15? minutes.
Your goal is to end up here, which it will automatically post your ad here (this is not immediate) and keep cycling through each player until it starts over again.
Market Channels
Each server has a busy [S]lagfest[/S] market channel where players will go to browse shops, this channel will have the most personal shops and the most people with dungeon parties up to try to buy and sell things.
Servers:
Mari - Channel 7
Alexina - Channel 1
Ruairi - Channel 1 (Thanks Mythical Detective Loki)
Tarlach - Channel 5

Upgrades for your hoe
As you use your hoe you will gain proficiency, proficiency is needed to upgrade your weapons and tools. This can increase gathering speed and how many potatoes you will get each time you use the hoeing skill, potato, the downside is that it increases the repair cost.
Ultimately it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to upgrade your hoe, and what you will choose if you do.
Storage
I highly recommend that you use the gap between each part-time job (1 in-game day) to gather more materials and store them so you can relax for a bit and not have to gather each time. **this will not work with the milk job**
You can use the bank or your pets (if you have ones with inventory space, which the free ones you get from the whistles do not have inventories) to store them, if you're storing eggs on a pet, make sure you don't use them in combat because all of your eggs will break. In fact, if you have very few pets, I suggest using your bank for eggs.
Using rain to your advantage
Rain increases the chance for you to get a lucky bonus and gather 2 or more potatoes and eggs at a time. If it is raining you should use that time to gather as much as you can.
Luck Titles
The luck stat increases your chance of lucky bonuses, which can give you 2-20 of the item you're gathering.
Titles are gained like medals or achievements when you fill a certain criteria or do a certain action, you gain titles. Titles give various stat bonuses along with stat decreases
The easiest to obtain (in my opinon) is "The Lucky"
Get a Huge Lucky Finish with over 2000 Gold or get a Huge Lucky Bonus
You can view all titles here.
Skills
If you have the AP to spare, I suggest ranking both the Egg Gathering skill and the Hoeing skill
They will decrease gathering time and increase the chance of getting extra eggs and potatoes.
And for skills, maybe dropping a few AP into getting Enduring Melody would be a good idea, as even rF's 200% regen rate would help with the stam-eating whacking of trees for Berries/Apples and cut back on Stam Potion costs.
And the AP cost to get it to rF is only 3.
1 for rF Playing Instrument, which is needed to get the Enduring Melody/Lullaby quest and,
2 for rF Enduring Melody.
In Conclusion
This may seem complicated, but it's extremely simple and profitable, and if you have to time and patience to do it, you'll come out with heavy pockets.
A little message from the author
Botting is very common in Mabinogi, but it floods the market and drives down prices, so please don't bot, it's not cool and not fair to everyone else.
This guide took me almost 3 hours to make :x
Extra advice
Fran
More money info
Hi, sorry about posting too early in your guide thread, I should have read it more carefully. xD
Just wanted to let you know, if you didn't already, there's also the daily PTJ at the Puppet Shop in Emain Macha, that's got a pretty good reward for doing handicraft. I forgot what the rewards were exactly, but I think it was way more gold than Dunbarton PTJs. I think it might only be once a day, though. Not really sure.
Oh, there's also giving green gems to the birds in Tara, that can get you some nice shoes or random items like healing items and arrowheads that you can sell for over 100 gold each.
Ah, and also the daily quests in Cobh... there's one where you can give 5 nails for homestead stones, and one where you can trade a striped marlin for a shark thing that usually gives wood boards. :D
I'll have to look into this some more.
I recently came back from a hiatus, and wasn't here for the Belvast/Puppet/Cobh updates
Well, you could always try suggesting safe routes for commerce, a little effort goes a long way.
Basically avoid choke points.
But then again the bandits that spawn on top of you.
Hmmmm.
OH, fomor scroll quests, like mimics.
Also advise newbies to use life skill talents as it will provide more PTJ rewards and chances to get the belmont set pieces, the overall (F) anyway sells for quite a bit
This is a great way to earn both gold and exp, but if you screw up you're looking at losing a lot of your cargo. I strongly recommend getting a buddy to commerce with you.
I'm not sure rain increases the rate of Lucky Gathers.
Isn't it just Luck dependent?
But rain DOES increase the amount of times you can gather from a spot before it runs out.
And weeding hoes don't have an upgrade that increases the rate at which you find Giant Potatoes.
At least the wiki doesn't show such an upgrade.
And like Aubog007 said, Life skill talents increase the Exp and Gold reward of doing PTJ, as well as boosting the item reward by 20~ish%. (such as Basic Church PTJ giving 5 HW instead of 4).
Doesn't apply to the seeds Glenis gives you, unfortunately.
Since you mentioned Bard Songs, one of extreme importance would probably be Harvest Song.
It has an increase in gathering speed, which can help when gathering from those pesky chickens that like to move around randomly.
Of course you can't play Harvest Song alongside with Enduring Melody.
I just have to say, this is an amazing guide. I never knew that Glenis GAVE you the empty bottles. I always assumed I had to buy them, so I never decided to do them lol
*
I haven't worked on any bard skills yet, but I think I will now.
Nice :)
You could also throw the Lighthouse part time job into your guide as that gives wood boards and average/fine firewood!
Thanks Yuuki! If anyone has more information on this please feel free to fill me in.
Well..if they only pay like 100-200k, it still saves in the long run. Much more inv space, and way less slots they take up in their inventory. Of course, they all work the same. But if you buy that chunky thing for your inventory, you will want a devcat bag sooner or later anyways.
It's 3 or 4 times the cost for a 8x8 bag which only takes up 2x2 instead of whoknows how much. Selling via party ad takes more effort, but if you are going to sell that many stacks of HW that you'd want a shop, you might as well sell all that via ad, buy a bag and benefit from more space.
Edit: Pardon me if these paragraphs sound a bit wooden, I'm just tired atm.
Just wanted to say this is inaccurate, as long as the npc is of the same part time job, the level you are at will carry over
I actually did a test of this to show you
Part Time Job 1 (Collen): http://i40.tinypic.com/2j2agie.png
Part Time Job 2 (Castanea): http://i40.tinypic.com/2n9aont.png
Part Time Job 3 (Kristell): http://i44.tinypic.com/282k3o.png
Just want your guide to be as accurate as can be~
Also I don't know whether this might be too advanced for a newbie, but some Healer Part Time Jobs offer Holy Water as well namely Manus, Heuffryn, Kirine and Belita (wouldn't recommend doing Belita though)
Heuffryn and Manus have a smaller chance at getting Holy Water though (33% chance with Heuffryn and 66% for Manus, but his non-Holy Water giving ptjs give out a decent amount of gold for a newbie)
Kirine always gives out Holy Water, so if the newbie gets a Giant from the assistant card, they could possibly get double the amount of holy water they could get in a in-game day as long as they time continent warp correctly. Since Kirine's ptj starts at 7am and turn-in is at 9am, you could have continent warped at midnight for her job, then continent warp at noon for Kristell's job.
Its a nice guide I won't lie, but you're missing a lot of things.
-Apple Trees can also be found RIGHT IN YOUR OR SOMEONE ELSE'S HOMESTEAD. That way you don't need to go a super long distance and back.
-PARTNERS. Get them to 80 Disposition (241 if Commerce) and watch those 2x, 3x, or even 4x items drop from gathering. Does not include milking though.
Wow, everybody forgot about albey red/rabbie basic?
Most of my money came from it back in the day from all the fomor scrolls. If the char is strong enough and don't need upped weapons, can just use stock weapons and then sell for ego repairs. It's a pity that the completed black orb is useless for g1, it was easy 100k per orb.
