I am looking for some guides to follow. Never was much of a lann player so wouldn't even know where to start with her skills

I played her to about level 40 so far,
I spammed counter on bosses
she is nearly able to just stop mid combo to block.
Get stacks and counter was how I played her.

I am having trouble with cross cut. Is there a difference between perfectly timed cross cut and regular cross cut? I see some people able to cut through bosses while I can only push them with the cut.
What I do is press cross stance right before being hit and spam LM.

There is no such thing as "perfect" cross cut, there is simply cross cut.
Cross Cut at no stacks (no pride buff) will not cut through bosses, and will be very weak. You need at least level 1 pride to cut through bosses, and each higher level significantly increases damage, knockdown, and sp gain. At level 3 (red cross cut / blue pride buff icon) cross cut /double cross will also take 0 stamina to cast.
All I will say is to learn when to use Cross Cut, and when to use Storm Step. As a rule of thumb I avoid using Cross Cut below level 2 pride buff, unless it is an attack that I simply cannot avoid otherwise (i.e Thor's thunder charge).
As far as skills go, standard universal skill priorities apply, Crit / normal / smash /stat masteries to rA+. Gale/Squall can be ranked accordingly in order to unlock the next, cross cut / double cross max. Backlash will suffice at rA, as r9+ doesnt really have much use outside of Glas at this stage.

Just as a quick reference.
1 hit = Blade Heart 1
~7/8 hits = Blade Heart 2
~14/15 hits = Blade Heart 3
The most important thing to remember is that a full LLRR combo should be enough to level to Blade Heart 2, and a second one should be able to get you to 3. I don't even have the exact hit numbers memorized, but I've been able to get by just by knowing that.
As for a few other skills. Naturally rank your Sword/Armor masteries as required to equip your gear. Ranking Storm Step is good even if you don't need the extra invincibility, as it decreases the stamina cost and just makes it easier regardless.
Rank Tumult Blade, it's your main DPS move and you'll want it doing as much damage as possible. This takes priority over just about any other smash skill with the exception of Cross Cut/Double Cross.
Cross Stance isn't necessary, but rank it if your timing is a bit off. I still don't think Blade Heart ranks do anything significant, so you can hold off on that as well. Slipaway/Backlash ranks are mostly unnecessary, but like Boulder said, get Backlash to A as that's when you can fully reflect Keaghan's phase 1 projectiles. You can hold off on Gale/Squall as those aren't used that often.
Also Stamina Mastery to D, cheap and Vella just really eats stamina fast.
Regarding actual guides though, I know of none. I know someone on the Nexon forums was apparently writing one, but I don't know if that ever actually happened.
I have a half finished first draft saved on my computer, but it's nowhere near complete or useful. Doubt I'll finish it any time soon either, at least not until Dual Blades come out.

I have to say, Fiona and Vella seem to have a higher skill cap than Scythe Evie. Never had this much trouble pulling any Evie attacks :/

If you're just leveling your vella at the moment, all you need to do is hit the boss once with any attack (for example one left click) and then you can cross cut through the boss as long as you do it while your blade heart status is up (the first level is 10 seconds so it should be more than enough time). You lose blade heart after a cross cut or if you get hit so you need to hit the boss again after a counter to regain it.
For leveling I'd say your main damage is just cross cut spamming like crazy. If you have the stam and enough of a window to do so, you can do LLR tumult as well right before another cross cut (or just LLR). If you run out of stam just keep spamming left click and you should be able to get in a normal hit in time to crosscut the next attack.
If you aren't going through the boss or at least through a portion of the boss, you don't have blade heart while you're crosscutting so that might be the main issue. :o Vella should be one of the easiest classes to solo with so just keep at it! c:
