Not so much a conspiracy, it's just inevitable that for consoles to keep up with PCs, they need to become PCs.
Then once they become PCs, what's the point of having them if you could just have a PC?
One could argue things like easy placement, or game pad controllers... PCs can have them too, so invalid.
This is exactly my concern.
What's the point of purchasing consoles if they're just going to end up as shitty PCs? We didn't have to deal with DRM for the longest time on consoles and now that we're getting all of the problems with PC gaming on console gaming, it makes sense to say fuck the system and live off steam.
Not to mention, developers have been screwing console owners over for the longest time. Skyrim had two expansions and neither were that great. Console owners get to play the same shit until they happily buy up the next shit Bethesda pushes out while modding communities will keep Skyrim alive on PC for years.
The more I hear about the next "generation" of video games, the more I want to stop playing console games entirely. I already have a decent PC.
It just sucks to lose certain exclusive titles.

xbox and ps4 are really getting hit hard with rumors/info of DRM/backwards compatibility and sale of used games (especially the latter).

I'm not sure if I'm becoming a bitter old man that can't accept changes and innovation or console gaming is starting to become comparatively shitty relative to PC gaming. It seems like the gap is widening and really started with the PS3. I love my PS3, but it along with the 360 were starting to make questionable decisions for the first time when the PS2 and original Xbox generally did not. I feel like too many risks have been taken, forced innovation in a desperate effort to be ahead. As a result, we can't just enjoy the nice staples of modern gaming: A basic (optional) internet connection, a good controller, and high resolution gameplay with a good framerate. Maybe motion controls because a lot of people seem to be into that. But do we need an always-on camera? Do we need a motion remote? Do we need it to function as a TV? Do we need it to play mp3s, stream videos, have a browser, etc? Does it need to be filled with apps? Does it need to do anything but load discs?
So what if this has been done for a while now with older consoles? It's a god damn video game console. It's for playing video games. When they start throwing all this extra multimedia crap on there, it drives up the price and cost of production unnecessarily just to fill out a checklist. Honestly, it doesn't even need to read (traditional) CDs and play movies. That is not what it's for. Let people who want to do that buy a separate media player and stack it on top so the people who don't need it can save 50 bucks. It all simply feels so wasteful...
I completely support consoles becoming PCs, though. For those who say, "why not just get a PC, then?" Well, not everyone can build one, a console will have a specific type of support for games and be streamlined for the process, etc. A PC is simply a different product that happens to play video games, too. A (good) console should involve almost exclusively playing video games. And a console will have many exclusives which are unavailable to traditional PCs. In theory, a console "should" be able to offer better price:performance gaming if it focuses on what it's supposed to do. Why? Because if it's a gaming console, then it never has to put up with the things a computer typically would, it only has to operate games as efficiently as possible rather than a variety of programs. It doesn't need a massive amount of compatibility or support, it just has to do one thing exceptionally well over and over again.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

In that case it looks like the Wii U is the only worthy console this generation. It's focused on gaming and fun, while sony and MS are trying too hard to do everything and are making actual gaming more difficult with all the supposed DRM and annoying things. It really shows that nintendo is an actual game company while sony and MS have never been all about the gaming. I guess in the past their consoles weren't so bad because technology didn't allow them to make them shittier.

Hell i've been saying that since the 7th gen of consoles.
The ps3 and 360 were dumbed down PCs while the Wii was a gaming console with a few online capabilities. Which I think is all a gaming console should be.
Although having Netflix on my wiiu is nice
