I'm not sure if this is the right section, so move this thread if it's in the wrong section

So I'm doing a static image for english and our theme is based on racism in america.
But i don't live in america so i don't know what actually happen in america, especially in the 1930s.

My poem is Strange Fruit
And here's the poem

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

So any information about racism in that period of time would be much appreciated. Of course i can use google, but i'd rather not use any incorrect information in my static image. And yeah, i'll you your information and google's, so it's much much much more accurate.
