Sometimes I just feel like dropping ranged and switching to become an alchemist instead.
Would this be a smart move for someone like me? Feels like alchemy is something for a more "in-depth player", i.e. a higher leveled one with a back-up skill set like melee or ranged, like alchemy is just kind of a side category that I could work on after I rank other things. Currently, I'm a total level of 100+ and I've barely scraped up rank 5 Ranged Attack (elf, btw). I mean, of course I'd continue to work on my ranged skills but alchemy would be prioritized more.
And I'm not just thinking of doing this just for a Royal Alchemist position. I just like alchemy. :x

Alchemy takes a ridiculous amount of both AP and time to be good at. Personally, I think that pure alchemists are pretty bad at combat. I thought alchemy was supposed to be a support for other categories and other players.
Like, barrier spikes helps range and magic. Flamer helps occupy monsters for awhile. Golem can be used with melee for maximum control. Frozen Blast is self-explanatory.

You know you can train an alchemy skill or two and still do ranged o.0
You don't have to just "drop" skills in mabinogi. Get them all!

Alchemy is definitely a supportive skill set. Water cannon can't handle single-agro at all and flame burst is pretty glitchy. Frozen blast is CP dependent/luck based. Golem summoning is awesome but the crystals are pretty uncommon. Spark is incredibly difficult to obtain and deals poor damage. Alchemy skills give pathetic stat bonuses to boot.
Focus on range before diving into alchemy if you so choose. Alchemy isn't outclassed, it's just annoying to maintain and slow in combat due to a lack of decent offensive skills.
tldr; r1 Windmill/refine, gogogo

Alchemy is just a fun side thing for me, so if you find it fun, just go for it. That's the point of the game, right?

No more sad panda? D:
I suggest being a hybrid of the 2, with Alchemy's Barrier Spikes to support and protect you while doing ranged attacks, and using golems when you need to do melee stuff. :thumb:

I'm a pure alchy and can handle Multi aggro thanks to r1 water cannon and r9 frozen blast. Plus r7 life drain XD I own plenty of players now! And I can't wait to get spark ranked up XD. So yeah alchy can be a great thing if you pure it, but sine you already have pretty good range your cp will keep you from getting good at it fast enough. So for you I agree with the others barrier and golem for support. Good luck with alchemy it's fun :D

Alchemy is probably something you might want to do once you've gotten a solid grounding in a different skillset, i.e melee/range/magic. Alchemy is powerful but very supplementary, also you barely get any attributes from it either.

Can you afford the time and money cost that goes into training alchemy/using it effectively? If yes, then go for it! If not, then build up your main skillset.

You're awfully sweet.
To the OP, I would suggest continuing Range as Alchemy requires lots of AP to become any efficient in it and a high rank of Alchemy Mastery. Nonetheless, if you do wanna venture into it, rank Barrier Spikes as that complements your Range quite well.
Some nice support skills are Frozen Blast and Life Drain (for healing HP).
Lots of people do Golem as well, just 'cause Snow Golems are badass like that.

Short advice:
Keep range, pick up barrier spikes and alchemy mastery, don't bother about royal alchemist at all, just go for whatever that helps you in ranged combat. Don't pick up all the alchemy at one go because it is a high possibility that you will become jack at all trades but master at none, especially when you haven't mastered anything yet.
The long wall-of-text of explanation:
It's best not to drop the main skillset (in your case, ranged) for alchemy, because alchemy is really difficult to train from scratch. You need money, a lot of time and a lot of effort to sustain it.
The trouble with alchemy is that without a decent alchemy mastery rank, many of the alchemy skills deal low damage. I find that Summon Golem is really useless with a lettered-rank alchemy mastery.
Now, why do I say not to bother about royal alchemist? I hate to be the bad person, yet I need to say this. The more established players on your server have the upper advantage on the royal alchemist position (the achievement journal is rather biased to players with very high combined levels, they give like what 30 points to them for each thousand level milestone). Combined with that they may have better ranks in alchemy skills to qualify as the top.
You can attempt to get that position, but the next thing you need to ask yourself whether you need it. It might seem to be a fun thing with those cool postures and clothing, but the real deal is that it is a position with responsibility. People will be seeking you out for help. If you are unable to help, it is pointless to be a royal alchemist.
I have noticed that the people who have the ability to help others tend to keep the positions for a longer time than the others.
Would you sacrifice a lot on alchemy to train it up immediately and risk being weak for a long time to come to go for some position that you keep for 1 week before possibly losing it to someone else, or would you go for the skills that would actually help advance your character in the best way possible to allow you to enjoy the game, and slowly build up on alchemy at the same time? You decide.
I'm sorry to say this even though you just like alchemy, because it seems to me that you have some intention of going for the royal alchemist position and that worries me a little. (Not because of jealousy. Just a few concerns as listed up there as well as seeing a friend with initially somewhat the same situation as you - who eventually gave up alchemy to focus on melee, and I feel that was a waste.)

Alchemy can stand alone as a skill set pretty well, at least as well as ranged. Wind blast is essential, life drain is a huge help and flame burst and water cannon are your bread and butter. Golem summoning is like another branch of it's own.
But like others have said, you really need decent ranks of all of the above before you can really get rollling...so make sure you have a backup. You don't have to max out your dex or anything, just keep your range current.

Most alchemy are quite the CP killers. If you aren't done training some of your combat skills, you may want to wait a bit.
