  That last part has been answered a few times (I think). It's a shield. You get shield mastery buff from it and can charge with it. You can use any 1h weapon with it and if your a giant 2h swords and lances.
  
  As for heat buster being used with it, I really doubt they'd limit guard cylinder that way. It's a hybrid 'weapon' (lol shield) All cylinders can use any alchemy skill with the exception of the elemental wave which requires the guard cylinder so there's no reason the guard cylinder won't let you use x alchemy skill on its on.
