BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Authorities say a teenager has drowned in the Niagara River in Buffalo while trying to save his 7-year-old sister after she slipped into the water.
Local media outlets report that the 17-year-old boy jumped into the river Monday afternoon as his younger sister was being carried away by the swift current off an island in the river.
The teen managed to get the girl to shore, where two older sisters were standing, but he was swept downriver. The 13-year-old sister jumped into the water to help her brother, but she also struggled against the current.
That's when fisherman Leonard Stevens jumped into the water. He rescued the 13-year-old but the boy disappeared under the surface. Police divers found his body about 45 minutes later.

It's a pretty popular activity out here to walk on the rocks by the river, but this island lacks the flat rocks that most of the other river shore parks have so it isn't uncommon for people to slip into the river (this is actually the...fourth? death in like 2~3 years) but this is the first time someone so young has died saving someone else.
It's a shame this young man had to die so young, but I admire his bravery for immediately going after his sister. If he hadn't she would've been gone in a few minutes.

You would think after so many people slip and die they would learn to take a walk elsewhere. That's like watching other people drink poison and die and saying "Hm, maybe I'm immune. /drink"

It's mainly an issue of parental supervision. Lots of kids around here just wander around and of course they don't exactly pay attention to the news either.
But yeah, I never understood why people are so drawn to the rocks...the river is terrifying enough from a distance.

Yeah, I've been to the falls once, I imagine the river must be pretty strong.
Well, it's still a sad story even if it could have easily been avoided just by not going there. ;;

Can you really blame the little 7 year old girl for not knowing any better?
I'm pretty sure most of us here got burned once before we learned that fire is bad -.-

This girl is going to have a lot of survivor's guilt.

And that fisherman is gonna be pestered with questions like why did he decide to save one but not the other.
Also it's kind of ridiculous how there's a lot of stories where the rescuer dies like this. The irony of it all is quite depressing.

At least he saved his sister. I'm sure even in his final moments he didn't have any regrets about the situation

This article was so poorly written I had to re-read it like 3 times.
