Another laptop suggestion thread!

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. So it's that time of the year again. I need a laptop in the price range of around $1000 with probably +/- $100-$200.

Things I'll be using the laptop for:
-College stuff. (need to be able to render shit because engineering programs)
-Games. (would preferably like a laptop that can run most of the current games on medium to semi high settings or well, if it can run games say, 5-6 years from now on minimum setting that will be fine too.)

As for screen size, I have no real issue with a small screen since I might be bringing my 21" monitor to college with me.

Make sure to get the 1920 x 1080 screen though. :V

This is the laptop I'm currently using except it is 650m SLI. It works good enough for me to play current games on high like Guild Wars 2

I'm a fan of MSI, so they get my recommendation. However, that's a 17 inch laptop. Are you sure you'd be fine using that in college?

Well I might consider buying a cheap tablet to take notes with etc if the laptop is too much to carry around. Would I be better off trying to find the same laptop with a smaller screen size?

Diffference between branded model and barebones: Build quality of the two is generally the same. With the branded, you get MSI's warranty. With the barebones, you have the warranty of the re-seller. Also, the barebones looks different from the branded and the barebones has just a blue backlit keyboard, while branded has multi-color.
