Regardless - that post granted me some interesting insight. I personally am inclined to believe that if the warning/infraction is justified, that a user's feelings about a Moderator really does not matter. Once you get past the fact that you can't make everyone happy - I think the job becomes a bit easier.
And yet it happens. I think everyone in the staff is guilty of doing it. You should see some of the ridiculous reports we get. You instantly look, groan, and then hope someone else deals with it. Even I feel it sometimes.
It isn't about whether we're afraid to hand out a warning or infraction. After all, if someone broke the rules and it has come to our attention, I don't think anyone in the staff is afraid to act on it. What we're afraid of is when we
don't have to warn or infract, but we're being expected to. That is actually the situation with 100% of skipped cases over the past few months. Technically, its not a problem that we don't do anything since the reported post was not an issue to begin with, but we
have to make a report feedback to let the reporter know that.
By not responding to a report, we return to the perpetual cycle of the members constantly giving moderators shit for playing favorites or not doing our jobs. I thought a feedback system would help prevent that, and it has seen success to some degree, but it is actually still happening (now specifically focused on individual staff rather than the staff entity as a whole). When you dismiss a case and send a feedback, you take the fall for the rest of us.
I haven't really confirmed it with my team that this is the actual problem before posting about it earlier, but seeing as how these kinds of cases are always the ones being skipped, and with the comments being left some of the staff in private just a few minutes ago, I'm pretty sure I'm right about this being the problem.
I don't know how anyone could possibly use this as a justification to ignore/"put off" a report. If you are a member of the Moderation Staff, it is your problem.
This isn't really something that can be scratched off by talking about the ideal moderator and how they handle their jobs. Its really more about what is happening, what will happen, and how I'm contemplating fixing it.
I don't think telling them to man up is going to solve this issue and hiring new mods probably won't be as successful.
