FUCK YEAH
Tune into a TV if you can. Prop 8 ruling coming up.
CNN as it happens
Atlantic Wire
Section 3. Definition of marriage
In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.
Essentially, all same-sex marriages administered in states permitting it are recognized as being equal to heterosexual marriages by the federal government (all benefits are extended to same-sex couples). Unsure if this extends to states that do NOT allow same-sex marriages. Either way, marriage is no longer legally defined as being between a man and a woman, which is fucking awesome.
Edit: Prop 8 ruling coming in now. Seems to indicate that same-sex marriage is OK in California, but the decision doesn't affect other states.
It's been a good day for America.

It would be nice if we could just skip this annoying little dance and go ahead 'n legalize it everywhere in the US, seeing as it will inevitably happen and a little over half of the US already supports it. (not to mention 71% of the newer generation, which will undoubtedly be the ones to eventually legalize it nationwide)
But either way, I'm happy. Could be better, but it could also be a lot worse.

This is a victory today.
Progress works in steps.
:)
I'm so happy. If I were to get married in New York, my marriage would be just as equal as a straight one. AWESOME. One step towards equality!

The problem remain that notm any church will allow it.. mostly in the south. The governement might accpet it finally but for people who want beautiful wedding, they might have an hard time finding a priest that would do it for them

There are a lot of churches out there who do same-sex marriages in the states that same-sex marriage is recognized.

So? Not everyone wants a church wedding. Some gay people less than most. You don't need a priest to have a valid marriage ceremony

That's between homosexual couples and the church, not the government and the church.
While i'm not personally opposed to Uncle Sam punching the church in the face, it's not good business.
DOMA was the last really big obstacle standing in the way of gay marriage. Hopefully, people won't make a big deal about this and get it redacted.

They'll try. Whether they will succeed or not is up in the air.

It's fun watching right-wing religious pundits gash their teeth at this ruling.
BTW, nation-wide Gay Marriage has been legal in Canada for about 8 years already. It hasn't cause the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to wreak havoc across Canada yet.

oh man. the BS they're throwing around... "Marriage as crafted by the hand of God." No it fucking wasn't. It was a socio-economic contract between two families that involved the exchange of goods/persons. Ain't got nothing to do with Jesus.

Between this and the Texas abortion bill not passing...it was a good day.
Unfortunately, SCOTUS avoided ruling on whether states could ban gay marriage, so they technically still can...for now.

Yeah, I'll never be able to understand how religious folks try and act like they have a right to dictate who can and can't get married simply based upon their beliefs. I mean.. marriage predates Christianity. No religion "owns" marriage and therefore has no right to define it.
But whatever. Not like they're going to magically get their heads out of their asses anytime soon. We can only hope that the number of idiots continues to dwindle slowly but surely so the newer generation doesn't have to deal with so many religious nutcases.

Eh. I think there's only like.. one? state that doesn't have it banned anyways, and I doubt the ones that currently have it legalized are suddenly going to change their minds, so it should be fine. The bigger issue is trying to get the other states to legalize it now.
Some LGBT/same-sex marriage-related organization (can't remember which) says their goal is to get the rest of the states to do it within the next 5 years, so.. yeah, we'll see how that goes. I'm sure some of the upper west/east states won't have too much trouble with it, but the south is definitely going to take a lot longer to convince.
