"[s]omeone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,’ to which [Justin] replied 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ and the next two lines were lol and jk [all sic]."

If he can be jailed for that I could probably get something like 4 life sentences and an execution should my sentence ever be shortened enough for me to leave alive.

That comment was really shocking and I can see why people would be concerned.
I think that his comment should have consequences, but not like this. Make him do community service for a few weeks and maybe a psychiatrist if they still doubt him, but jail time? Too harsh.

How I see it, posting on someone's wall on Facebook is like yelling into a megaphone in public. You want everyone to read/hear your comments. There's the private messaging option available if you don't want to publicly announce things.
Even as a sarcastic joke, bad taste and too soon...

The point remains the same. It was an argument, the person called him insane, so he replied by saying something an insane person would say. Was the joke in bad taste? Sure. Was the joke OBVIOUSLY a joke? Yes. And it's not "too soon" the last school shooting was in December.
If anyone can claim they have never told a bad joke then they can go ahead and throw rocks at this kid. But know that I'll be right behind you to hang you for lying.
