A family pushes their son away, fucks his life up; makes the classic fucking mistake of making them go down the wrong path because they destroy the support network he's had his entire life.

I feel no sympathy for them, at all. Hopefully it helps other families be more accepting - but this is the sort of shit idiots never learn until they've been burnt; until it's too late.

They realized their mistake in the end and tried to make things right. People are stupid, idiotic, usually assholes, but it takes a lot to admit that you are wrong and try to make things right. It sounds to me like things would have gotten better if things didn't end up that way, and the goal the parents had was to make sure something like this never happened again. They shared their story knowing fully well they were sharing the fact that they were stupid, and idiotic and that everyone in the world would know this, hoping it would help another family deal with it differently.

Regret is a powerful force. I still regret the one time I rejected my father wanting to teach me to fix cars because I was not, and never will be interested in fixing cars.

They are not idiots or stupid. D:

They were simply trying to do the right thing in their mind, you have to realize that being brought up in a conservative family like that, their views are not like yours, they tried their hardest at doing what was right in their mind. They eventually found out that what they thought was the right thing to do, was actually wrong, and now they're telling their story in hopes other people will learn before it's too late.

And for that, even if they manage to save one family from facing a tragedy like they did by telling their story, I applaud them.
