i'm using a laptop
This tends to happen to me no matter how careful I am around my laptop keys after about 2 years of using the same computer. Never understood why.
I carefully took the broken off mine after ruling out software failure as a cause and jury-rigged a way to hit the button, usually using the small piece of plastic under the key and some tape.
I wouldn't try this though as laptop keys will NOT come back on in most cases, so if you take it off it's off for good. It tends to be asdf key rows that die first too, I have no idea why(perhaps all those wasd control games??).
Easiest thing to do will be to buy a usb-keyboard and just plug it in and put it over the regular one. I had to do that after my laptop I had for 3 years was loaned to my sister for a week(without my permission, I might add) and she wrecked it. It came back sticky and gross with crumbs and spilled drinks on it with 4 or 5 of the keys pulled off because "They got stuck"
