I got r1 smash yesterday, so I read the Wiki article about dans to see what I had to do next. I'm feeling like my knowledge is lacking though. Could someone, especially others with a smash dan, give me more info on what the heck I have to do?
Basically all I know is I can participate today since it's the 15th, it apparently starts at 5 pst, and I somewhat know about the monsters I'll have to face. Any broadening info would really be appreciated. :/

If you're going for the Smash Dan, then the only skill you can use that counts is Smash. Other skills, including normal attacks, won't do anything for you other than weakening them for an opponent to Smash it. This can be a bit of a challenge, since if you're going for the top half to pass the test, Smash can be your weakness, since you can only attack monsters that haven't aggroed you or are in Defense, and if you die, you lose points.
And you don't have any decent equipment. You're in a RP where you RP as your character with only one weapon and the Dan Test uniform. No pots either. Thankfully, the monsters drop pots frequently and the occasional weapon, so if you're a Human, you should be able to dual wield, unless the drop was a wand. Other than losing points, don't worry about dieing, since you'll automatically be revived after a few seconds.
Now for Smash, you want to run into big groups with the mobs in close proximity to each other, so that you can hit them with splash, thus adding more to your score. If you're careful, you can watch enemies that aggroed you, so you know if they're using Defense or a different skill. If it's Defense, Smash it, so that you don't have to deal with more than one enemy, but if it has another skill loaded, and it's not rushing towards you, attack a different monster, since you probably won't get the Smash out on the monster safely.
When the Trolls and Bugbear spawn, finish up what your doing, and go for the Trolls first. In 1st Dan, most of the time I see people fighting over the Bugbear kill, so that leaves the Trolls open for you. They don't give as many bonus points as the Bugbear, but if you kill it, then you can then join the fray with the Bugbear and at least get points from the damage (and if you're lucky and are testing with a bunch of newer/weaker players, you might even get the finish for the Bugbear).
But as long as you go after groups instead of single enemies, use Smash on the enemy that's aggroed to you with Defense loaded/Smash a different monster if the one aggroed to you isn't in Defense, you should be able to finish in the top half and pass your test.

You need 2 other people of similar or higher rank to sign up for a Dan test. Around 15-20 monsters spawn. More damage=more points, and you lose points when you die. It takes ~10 seconds to revive after death. The person with the highest point total wins, but there can be multiple winners, depending on how many people took the test with you.
I got Ninja'd!

Oh! That was very helpful!
What about the application process? I didn't really get that part either. :/

There's really nothing special. You just apply on the date, it costs 10k- uhh... more lol. The price raises the higher dan ur applying for. But that's pretty much it. Good luck finding ppl tho, the hype for it severely decreased haha.

Do I get my money back if we don't get a third applicant? There is only one other applicant right now.
And I see nothing about gold anywhere on the Wiki's Dan article...maybe I'm blind. o.o;

Unfortunately, you will NOT get your money back if there is no 3rd applicant.
Also, allow me to explain the "degrade" system.
If you are the only player signed up for a Dan 2 test or above, and there are TWO (must be exactly two, not one or three) players who is signed up for exactly one Dan below yours, you may wait until the time limit. As the timer resets to 10 minutes, you will be given the option to be degraded one Dan test down, so that you do not waste the money that you paid for your test.
For example. I'm applying for Dan 3 Windmill, and there are only two other windmill testers, both Dan 2. I wait until the timer hits 0.
EDIT: Please note that you MUST be the only one signed up for the Dan 3 Windmill test (in the situation above)
At this time, the game provides a message asking if you wish to "degrade" clicking yes will degrade you to a lower Dan test.
If you do take the lower Dan test, take note that
1) other lower Dan testers can join in (in the situation above, other Dan 2 Windmill testers can join)
2) other high Dan testers canNOT join in (in the situation above, other Dan 3 Windmill testers CANNOT join)
3) the higher Dan tester will only receive HALF of the exp originally given
4) the higher Dan tester will lose more points than the other players on death
5) there is no extra charge nor refund for "degrading"
Hope this helped you, I was crazy about Dans, and got Dan 3 Windmill with the degrading method =)
P.S. Get Dan ranks. Not only can you do Secret Part time jobs at Dan 3, the Lightning title looks HELLA good with your Master titles

i have a question about dan tests:
i have rank 1 range but not master title so should i finish training and get the master title or should i try dan tests to see how i go with them as i have never done one before?

Get the Master Title first but IMO it's not worth it Dan really gives no advantages 7 AP for a Title and 10% cheaper repair at a NPC. 32 AP for the 2nd Title and Secret PTJ :S

Smash dan 1 title isn't that useful, and it was only cool when nobody had it D:<
anyways though, i dont agree with the splash part.....if it multiaggroes you then you are seriously eff-balled.
