I'm surprised there's no DOTA2 threads around considering how it's International Tournament is now the holder of the largest Prize Pool for a competitive league... and it's funnnnnnnnnnnnn.
After a grueling 12-13 hours for 2 days of 4 games at a time for preliminaries (plus the final matches in the prelims) , it's time for the main event.
For those unaware, it starts with Na'Vi vs. Orange at Wednesday 12pm PST/3pm EST 8/7.
The prize pool started at $1.6mil USD, then players would be able to purchase Compendiums to help follow the tournament, do some fantasy E-Sports thing, and get some items to go with it. Compendiums cost $10 each, and each purchase adds 1/4th of the compendium cost to the prize pool (meaning, the prize pool goes up by $2.50 for every compendium purchase).
Currently, the prize pool is $2,837,270 USD as of 8/6/13 10:40PM (PST I think), meaning $1,237,270 was raised from fans alone, which means that Valve essentially sold $4,949,080 worth in Compendiums, which theoretically, the fans have then funded the whole prize pool, and part of the cost for hosting the event!

The event is streamed both on DoTA TV and Twitch, in which Steam has allowed Twitch to link to your Steam account so that you can get item drops on Twitch that are normally only on DoTA TV, plus increasing view count on your compendium couriers and team pendants.
