I nearly cut myself on that edge.
It's just true. At the time I thought it was a total accident and that this stuff happened all the time, so I didn't really care. I seriously thought planes just crashed into things sometimes and people died from random accidents. And, well, they kind of do. But not nearly as much as I thought at all.
I wasn't even aware it was a terrorist attack (or a big deal) until I found out later.
To this day, the real devastation to me is the fact that we've seriously disrupted our country over it. Or rather, we've used it as an excuse to do so. That's what 9/11 will always mean to me. It always sucks when people die unnecessarily, but let's face it, we've got more important things to worry about like cancer. They're just not someone's "fault" in the same way this was, so we get really morally offended by it.
I'm not saying that just because something worse is going on that it makes something not as bad not matter, but I'm saying we should prioritize the most prominent threats and it's almost like we've got it completely backwards. Either we're letting emotions override common sense or we don't
actually care about this because of our health and security, but rather because we want to see people we don't like (for a very valid reason!) suffer. And I understand that, but we should at least be
honest about it first and foremost.
