So I just finished knight and I'm trying to decide whether to work on getting more strength or dexterity (although it might be straightforward after I give the facts). I originally wanted to do carpentry because I could get potentially 24-42 str depending where I stopped whereas getting master warrior I would get an extra 8. Plus it would take more ap. Then, I thought about maybe raising my dex because I have 388 str clean, but I only have 126 dex clean. So, should I rank up Carpentry or Archery first?

If balance with your weapon > 80%, rank Carpentry
If its < 80%, rank archery skills.

Is this the normal rule of thumb? I guess I'll be raising dex. Thanks.

yes but also if you havn't gotten r1 sword mastery/combat mastery get them to r1 first then double check youur balance again

Oh, ah I did. If I didn't I'd probably be doing those haha.

if your gonna aim at raising your dex. i suggest attempt refine first. its easier when you have low dex.
you can then attempt to rank range attack and arrow revolver since they also have a few str near the end too if your gonna go pure warrior.

Wait, why is refine easier with low dex?

Because you get more proficiency for fails because it doesn't use all 5 ores usually.

Ooh. Huh didn't know that. I also read up that higher levels of refining requires fails so I should probably do that first...

Looking at your Post your character stats post, I suggest you rank your other warrior skills first if your main is melee. And refine is easier on lower dex because many parts of refine require fails, which happens more if you have lower dex (success rate caps at around 200 dex). But don't worry, it's not the worst thing you'll face. In fact, if I were to rate refining on a scale of 1-10 for difficulty (1 being easy) compared to all other skills in mabi, it'd be 3 at most.
Anyways, seeing as you don't have 300 base str... you probably might wanna go for some other str skills first, like blunt mastery, doppelganger, final hit, mining (this is really easy), berserk, etc. Also, AR and range helps for strength, and that's really the main reason why I'd say go range after melee.
The point being, don't try to hybrid too much at early level, your damage output won't be as much. Just find a balance between ranking enough str per level and dex.
Also, try to use wiki more often, since many of answers to your questions can be found there.

Refine pots are 100k right now, take advantage of it.
I'm also gonna go against the grain here and say do carpentry. If your character is built around strength I'd say do carpentry. Its a relatively easy life skill and has low AP cost so go id say just go for it.

@ironwoman: I use the wiki but I just fail to read sometimes x_x. I mean I was originally going to do carpentry for the strength boosts, but my brother recommended archery since my balance is so low with my lance (actually it's 71% but I want to reforge it so it'll probably lower to 50-60%). Then in this thread it made me think about refining since it would be easy to rank up at a low dex (tedious, but easy).
@SlurpTASTY: Too bad I'm too poor haha. Would probably do carpentry but I'm not sure because of the reason above.

here what i think you should do ...
rb into smithing talent and attempt to complete refining
if you can find a few cheap refine potions you can skip the last few tedious ranks.
while your at it, you can also quickly finish mining for the +str
next rb go into warrior but rank up range attack and arrow revolver [if you can get the skill] thus allowing you to raft for exploration exp [more ap]! While your at it rank up any missing warrior base skills if you have any ap left [dont bother ranking fh/charge?/blunt/axe mastery/evasion/def?/counterattack unless you have the ap for it]
after that go into carpentry talent and start ranking carpentry. If it gets boring you can take a break and slowly train any leftover +str combat skills and use any extra ap you gain.

I'd personally follow this advice. This is what I pretty much did, and range and AR is easy enough to rank up without talents (same for mining).

How do you even raft with range after the combat system update? Is it easier than Thunder?
