I don't want to give off the impression that i'm cocky, but, I noticed something interesting and I kind of want to test something. I've tried googling various sorts of phrases and wasn't able to find much on it. I was wondering if anyone on these forums have something called absolute pitch or pitch recognition. Ie if you hear some sort of sound/frequency within the note range, you'd hear a note and recognize instantly what that note is. I realized as I was listening to songs, I couldn't tell what notes a person was singing if they were singing lyrics, but as soon as it went to humming or just the melodic/instrumental background I could hear what the notes were. I also realized I heard them as do re mi fa sol la ti do, the sounds that my first music teacher taught me. A friend of mine said that he hears them as CDEFGABC rather than do re mi fa sol la ti do. Also, since the notes kinda of say what they are, as soon as a word is placed onto it (lyrics), I'm unable to hear the note saying what it is. So, I drew a hypothesis that for some absolute pitchers, the ability isn't actually what ones born with but rather somehow developed in early childhood. As in, they were able to match the frequency of notes to a certain sound that they associated with that note. And in the future when they hear that sound, they hear what they associated with it as a child. Does anyone know something about this? As in, when you were a child and you maybe learned notes in some other form ( QWERTYUIOP), you hear CDEFGABC as QWERTYUIOP? Thanks!

I do have a pretty refined pitch recognition but not in the sense you're talking about. I can listen to a melody once and be able to transcribe it on an instrument right away, but I wouldn't be able to tell you the name of the note because I don't know much music theory.

I did study music and was tutored in playing various instruments, however, even with that background I can not tell what notes would be in a melody upon hearing it. However, just like Slurp, I am able to play a melody on an instrument after hearing it.
