Just why does that term keep popping up everywhere in MMORPGs? It'd make sense in Star Wars: The Old Republic, since there's multiple worlds with one big bad boss in each of them, but World of Warcraft, Age of Wushu, etc only have one world. Heck, even Mabinogi started coining the term recently.
Can someone shed some light on as to why its repeatedly used despite the game's environment?

Sounds like a fancy way of saying field boss.

Technically there are multiple worlds in Mabi. Shadow Realm, Falias, Another World, and Avon are all separate worlds, we just don't get to explore them extensively.

How much stuff actually makes sense in MMOs? It's better to just play them and not fret over the technicalities.

I kinda see world boss as a more powerful version as a field boss.

I believe that if the community/game developers call similar features by similar names it can help to ease the learning curve/transition from one game to another. Lately I've seen game publishers call terms by community driven names as well.

Boss doesn't mean end-boss. How many games do you know where there's no boss at the end of each dungeon? A world boss is a boss that's in the world, opposed to in an instance. Field isn't a proper name, unless outer space is a field.
And WoW technically has 2 worlds.

It's because the term sounds badass. Much more than field boss anyways.
