Depressing Anime

  Angel Beats, Clannad After Story (didn't find clannad sad at all, 2 moments in after story killed me though.), Guilty Crown (Wasn't the best plot but the music and the last 10 min. of the last episode is pretty depressing), ending of Code Geass (was a great ending but depressing, can make grown men cry), and I found mirai nikki's ending (excluding ova) to be pretty depressing. I guess guilty crown, code geass, and mirai nikki had the most depressing moments while clannad(s)/angel beats have the most depressing episodes in general.

  There aren't too many depressing anime out there. A lot I'd say are more bittersweet than anything. Few portray that feeling of void an hopelessness well, I don't agree with 95% of the things people listed here.
  
  I really hate to put Eva up on a pedestal, but End of Evangelion really nailed it in the final scenes.
  
  Noein has to be the one of the most depressing looking anime I've ever watched though. I just can't feel happy watching it, the whole thing seems so bleak. Between La'Cryma and all the winter scenery in the present time, the animators did a great job with that.
  
  But the king of depressing anime is without a doubt "Now and Then, Here and There". I'm shocked that hasn't been mentioned here. You will feel like shit if you watch that.

  Gundam as a whole isn't depressing at all, even in the ones by Tomino like Zeta. Any moments that are even slightly depressing are cancelled out immediately by characters like Katz or Quess acting pants-on-head-retarded. Unicorn is too busy either being awesome with all the glorious MSVs, or Riddhe being assblasted to the maximum over Mineva. Not to mention Gundam has this terrible habit of introducing characters then killing them off the next episode, then expecting the viewer to feel bad.
  
  The only Gundam that I would say is depressing would have to be 0080 War in the Pocket. maybe Victory Gundam. Hathaway's Flash (still only a novel) though has a pretty sad moment when [SPOILER=""]Bright unknowingly sentences his own son to execution by firing squad.[/SPOILER] Bright had a hard life man.

  There are NO, and I mean, NO Comedic relief points in this serious anime, tons of dramatic deaths, and things really don't look optimistic until the last episode. I literally couldn't watch any other anime after it for 4 months it got me so depressed. (The Manga has comedic relief points, but the anime does not.)

  Welcome to the NHK was pretty sad for me as well. It was painful to watch, not that it's a bad anime, the story telling and animation was great. It's just hard seeing people in those kinds of situations.

  It really depends on the viewer to find something sad and not everyone has the same tastes. I love heero yuy for example and found a lot of story inside that outer rock hard shell of a silent protagonist and someone else who watches it might find him just bland as hell. Though its all fine to have disagreements

  I haven't watched the anime, but the manga's ending was a pretty good one. Code Geass on the other hand...

  From what Ive read about Unicorn, they really butchered Loni's role, and it could have been a lot better. I'll admit, in the latest episode that part with Marida and Zimmerman was pretty nice though.
  
  About Zeta... I know everyone has their own opinions and all, but come on, don't tell me moments like this didn't make you take the series less serious... Everytime Jerid is on screen I can't help but think something absolutely hilarious is going to happen.
