Obama has declared that flags should be lowered to Half in honor of the passing of Nelson Mandela in remembrance of all he accomplished in his lifetime for the good of others. This has of course angered the redneck community who outright refuse claiming they 'ain't gonna lower their flags for some foreigner'.

Although it is being done out of respect for somebody who worked for peace and human rights in parts of the world that don't have them, it is highly improper for the president to order this for an event that did not happen on american soil and does not directly affect this country.

I can see why people would be upset- it's not just the rednecks. This is highly irregular and could be considered abuse of authority even if it is being done out of respect.

We're not the only country choosing to show respect. France, Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Bermuda, Kenya and South Africa are ALL flying their flags at half to honor him. Why should we refuse just because 'MURICA! ? (And those are just some of the major ones, I'm sure there are plenty of others.)

So the president has the authority to decide which events he thinks warrant lowering the flag, and he has decided that this does.

Times the flag has been lowered for foreigners include

Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa (2013)
Pope John Paul II (2005)
King Hussein of Jordan (1999)
Yitzhak Rabin, prime minister of Israel (1995)
Anwar Sadat, president of Egypt (1981)
Winston Churchill in 1965.

So this isn't a one-time thing.

Sorry, I had no idea, I usually don't pay attention to this kinda stuff.

I still think it's weird to fly a country's flag half staff for someone not from that country though.

Well, I was just addressing the topic in general, wasn't trying to single you out. The quote was just to do with the first line.

Peace should be a global objective and this guy put in a lot of work towards that. It only makes sense for the world to show their respects and an almost universal method of doing so is putting flags at half mast.
