A man who provided sign language interpretation for Barack Obama and other dignitaries at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was "a fake", according to multiple sign language experts.
"He wasn't even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around."

Despite the title he wasn't JUST interpreting for Obama, he was interpreting for all the dignitaries present. Just wanted to clear that up before the Obama hate started.

Wow, just wow *shakes head*
I don't see how Obama can get the blame when this was South Africa's responsibility seeing that funeral was held in their country.
Anyways, it is sad to hear that.
This arcticle further adds on it:

U.S. Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said in response to an emailed question by the AP that "agreed-upon security measures between the U.S. Secret Service and South African government security officials were in place" during the service.
"Program items such as stage participants or sign-language interpreters were the responsibility of the host organizing committee," Donovan added.

I don't either, but I'm sure someone will try.
That's just really lame. How hard is it to find someone that knows legitimate sign language for a huge event like that? You would think that would be a pretty good thing to check, "Do you ACTUALLY know sign language?"

No offense to deaf people but I stopped giving a fuck after the first 5 or 6 times this aired on the radio today.
This was literally all anyone talked about on the news we listen to at work, and on my news RSS feeds it was everywhere. I'm getting more news articles pop up about this than about school shootings, the only thing that could top this is another 9/11 or the declaration of WWIII. Even Mandela's death was talked about less.
I supposed December 11th 2013 has been the slowest news day of the decade.

Well, I don't listen to the radio or watch tv and only saw it once on Facebook all day, so I guess it hasn't gotten annoying yet for me. Lol.

Maybe since it's same old promises and shenanigans as usual that they talk about this person was like =o= not worth knowing this, move along people, there's nothing to see here.
Or maybe this actually was HIS interpretation of what they were saying. xD
Ok crude jokes aside, that must be annoying to deaf folks that actually wanted to follow it, but eh big deal?
People can get so worked up over such things, I swear. They swarm around such things like moths to a flame milking out the drama from it to the last drop. Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with society. LOL

Ok, I myself am deaf in real life...
But... I'm not exactly sure what this was all about... Someone failing to get a sign language interpreter? Is that what I'm getting at, right?

Basically they hired someone that claimed to be a sign language expert but apparently didn't actually care enough to verify, so from what I understand the deaf people are pissed off that he was faking it so they didn't know what was being said, and that they couldn't be bothered to get someone who knew what they were doing. Also, the real sign language interpreters/experts are pissed that he was making a mockery of their field by just waving his arms around like an idiot and not actually doing even a single sign correctly.

Oh I see, that clear up some stuffs for me now.
Yeah, I would be pissed about that as well. For deaf students who enrolls in school, the law requires them to have a ceritifaced sign language interpreter.
I understand the law in South may be different, but it's not that hard to ask for ceritiface to verify he/she is a professional interpreter.

So apparently they tried to translate what he was saying for fun. It was on the news today. It was hilarious. And his story...he was having a delirium or something? He said he saw angels fly into the stadium... LOL Riiight.
