So I watched the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug yesterday in 3D and dear lord was I impressed.
The bees were incredibly detailed and looked like they were right in front of me. I actually flinched and tried to move my body to avoid the bees cause it looked like they were right in front of me.
Then when the Giant Spiders came, dear lord, totally freaked out. Had to cover my eyes a bit cause having them right in front of me with their giant mandibles was way too much for me to handle.
Did I mention how much insects really freak me out? So ya, you know 3D has come a long way when it's able to elicit reactions like that from me.
Whats your guys thoughts on 3D movies and how far they have come?

I've so far never been impressed by 3D movies, the main issue is that the 3D is usually an after thought so they just do the intro graphics or something in 3D and minimal 3D in the movie.
I didn't see Avatar in 3D though. So assuming avatar was awesome in 3D (like everyone keeps telling me) the only movie I've seen that I thought made excellent use of 3D is Gravity.

The only 3d movies I've watched were Alien Pocahontas and Immortals. I liked the 3d effects from Avatar but that was when it was more of a novelty. The 3d format seemed a lot more polished with Immortals coming out two years later. I have high hopes for the upcoming 300: Rise of an Empire movie and will probably check that out since I'm not much of a Hobbit fan.
edit:
Oh yeah, forgot about John Carter. Didn't watch it but I think it was one of the movies that turned people away from 3d since, like Osayidan said, 3d was an after thought.

Avatar was alright.
I also saw the Hobbit, the bee part actually got me to try and dodge it.
Dredd 3D was fucking awesome.
I saw Pacific Rim in Blue Ray, kinda wished I saw it on 3D.

I remember just seven years ago when we still had to wear the red and blue glasses...
Now we don't, and it's awesome. I mean, look at the 3DS! The only other 3D movie I've seen was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 and it was beautiful.

So far, I'm impressed with 3D movies, especially with a movie like Kong-fu panda 2.

3ds is the only exception.. Most movies don't focus on 3d and just slap it on so that they charge you double for a ticket. I hate 3d because I wear glasses and its so annoying to wear rayban specks and put on these look a like 3d ones over it. Sooo uncomfortable. Most movies I've seen don't even try to have eye popping moments. I loved spykids3d tho i cannot lie.
My ex loves the glasses though so that's a plus???
