Recommendation on a build?

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. I am thinking about getting a new compute in the future, hopefully within the next few months, I have a laptop at the moment, and am looking to invest in a desktop. So, my question is, what would be a pretty good rig for a range around $1000? I can/am willing to build it, or pre-made rigs are fine. Just looking for some good recommendations, and obviously this would be for gaming. Thank you.

With the OS, it's around $900. That leaves you $100 to upgrade the video card (just keep in mind PSU limitations) or get a SSD.

A SSD would be nice, to atleast configure the default startup processes to, along with maybe a few commonly played games. Overclocking is fine by me, and yes, I will be pirating Windows 7.

Meh, windows 8 has a bunch of crud I really just don't care for. And yes, I know I'm downloading it illegally, but I'm in high school, I'm not particularly made of money, and all of this will be coming out of my pocket.

If you really want to save money remove the optical drive and install windows 7 from a USB.
You're definitely going to need case fans. On the Antec site, it says the Antec One brings two case fans, but there are 3 optional ones.
The Noctua NF-F12 PWM is considered the best 120mm case fan right now but they cost like $25, and there are two 120mm mounts so that's $50
And then there's the 140mm case fan mount, and the NF-A14 FLX I think is considered the best in that category, but that also cost $25

So that's about $75 worth of fans, that you could get later and is completely optional as long as you don't overclock insanely, but if it was me I'd get rid of the optical drive and at least buy one of the fans.

* - should be noted there might be better fans. I don't really know that much about fans.

I was planning on installing windows 7 onto a flash drive anyway, so that is a good idea. As for fans, I'll look into the ones you recommended, and thank you for your recommendations thus far.

Installing on, or with?
I don't suggest running a windows OS off a flash drive, even if it's USB 3.
Linux on the other hand you could get away with that.

Well that sounds acceptable enough. ANd it's true. Personally I'm just waiting for the next version because I can't be bothered with Win8.

I was thinking about Linux, though I'm not experienced with that OS, so I thought Windows 7 would be a safer bet for the time being. And as for your recommendation, why do you say that?

Also, I may be bumping the budget up to $1500, though I don't know if that'll be necessary, or how likely that is. Like I said, all of this is coming out of my pocket, and I have to manage work with extracurricular and school, so I don't know how likely getting a computer will be until the summer, when I can work more, especially since I'm saving up for conventions this summer. Any websites where parts come cheap will be HIGHLY appreciated. Thank you everyone.

Then you have the consider performance, USB2 just simply won't do it for a Windows OS, USB3 might do the job but I'm not sure it can handle all the different applications that windows will constantly run (antivirus, updates, background processes...) not to mention any apps you install that get forced into program files on the C: drive.

Finally there's capacity/cost. The cost of a good quality, solid USB3 drive that's large enough to properly run windows (take into consideration that M$ recommends a minimum of around 30GB just to install windows), and the fact that it will grow in size whether you want it to or not with windows updates and other apps being installed, you can buy a decent hard drive that's much larger that you can just shove in there and forget about for years to come.

These are the two sites I usually go to for sales.
I usually check more on the sub-reddit since PCPartPicker only tells you the cheapest price when you do a build.

Also $1,500 is more than enough to build a great computer.
You can get a 780 and if you could make it into a mini-ITX build.

Anywho with $1,500 you'd definitely be set for quite some time.
