Next-Gen Console War!

  I think "Steam OS" would be a better vote than "Steam Machine", since you can build your own, and dual boot SO and Windows.
  consoles are dead, don't expect any more than a 9th gen of what we can still legitimately consider a gaming console (excluding hand helds).

  Ya Hand-helds are pretty solid. Truth be told, only reason I own a console is because as far as I can tell, only way to play the Zelda and Pokemon games is via the devices themselves. I mean yes, there are emulators but that's not a legit way to play games, as it's sort of like pirating at that point, unless you pay for the emulator/game.
  
  Unless I missed something and those franchises are available on Steam...
  
  On the flip side however, the one thing that Nitendo is good at is motion controls (ex: Skyward Sword) and seem to be improving in that. However the Wii U was a step back from motion controls a bit.

  I hate them all honestly. If I had to pick one, it would be ps4 for all of those gundam games and everything else that I can now get cus of no region lock.
  
  I haven't been excited for a consolde for a while. I've played so many games on my 300 dollar laptop, that the need for consoles has just gone away.

  I'm hoping that xbox one and ps4 emulate the ps2s life span and continues on for over 10 years. I feel like its all about the money though now and it won't happen.
  
  Ps2/gamecube blew everything out of the water imo and can never be replaced. Imagine if they still made games for those omg.

  PS4 and xbone are restricted PCs with custom parts.
  xbone runs windows 8 ffs.

  There's a huge difference though.
  Just because you can play games on it doesn't make it a console
  Cellphones aren't considered gaming consoles because they don't specialize in gaming even though they offer games.
  You can even play games on ti-83 calculator doesn't make it a gaming console.
  
  If it wasn't designed to primarily play games then it's not a (video game) console.
  Building a PC doesn't make a PC a console either, if I buy a nexus 7 solely for gaming are all of a sudden tablets video game consoles?
  And just like PCs, tablet (and cellphone) gaming is becoming more and more popular.
  
  That's just the way I see it though.

  Yes but in the same scope of logic, consoles are evolving into multimedia devices. You can browse the web, use apps, watch your movies and music...
  All they're missing to be the same as a PC is a desktop.
  The only one that stays as close to being a console as possible is Nintendo.
  
  The line between the 2 is becoming thinner and thinner, next generation or the one after consoles won't even exist anymore in the way we know them. They'll basically be the same as steam machine but branded by the manufacturer and have whatever custom software they make for the user interface.

  I have no doubt that the next console generation the Xbone Dos and the PS Quint will no longer focus as games as the main selling point(which as you pointed out, I wont consider video game consoles), they will be just as you said PCs, or peripheral for televisions that act like a HTPC of sorts to your television like a more "fleshed-out" smart TV-esque peripheral.
