Is max damage of a beam sword a joke due to the balance being zero?

They're still viable. With a moderate amount of dex and rank 1 sword mastery anybody can use beam swords and have 80% balance.

Is it because of the special upgrades? Because beam swords have more damage even after the first 5 upgrade of the battle swords.

Of course it is.
Now use your common logic here. Wouldn't you, at some point, benefit more from 334% crit damage instead of 250% with slightly higher base value?
And just fyi, this break point is easy to reach. And by the time you reach that point, you're much better off using a lance.
