So since I'm trying to get my dext up on archer elf by Refining (meaning I avoid raising my dext...), where's the best place to get ore?
I read Barri Dungeon is good, but since my elf is still weak, he gets mauled by the goblins there. Only other choice for mining would be Ant Hell, but I've never really liked that place... should I stick with it anyways? Or is sieving better than mining?
I was thinking about trying out the Commerce system in order to get gold to help sustain myself, but apparently there is the chance of being attacked by bandits. Does that mean I'll have to be fairly good combat wise to make the best out of it?
Lastly, equipment. Should I bother buying NPC equipment to handle Barri/Bandits better? What kind of equipment would I get? (p.s. I'm poor) I don't think I'll bother with Enchanting for now, seems complicated.

1. Do Metallurgy at Qilla beach.
2. Most of the time you can avoid bandits. Sometimes you can't so it's recommended to at least invest somewhat in combat or bring a friend.
3. Fomor Leather Long bows aren't too bad at your level/funding.

If you have enough money, it's not a bad idea to buy ores from other players.
If you are going to do commerce, be prepared to at least face hardened bandits. (If you wanna make actually good profit that is)
As for equipments, fomor leather long bow or focused beam swords are nice for lower leveled players.

If you buy a bunch and record them with the NPC reforges until you get an elemental level2, and put some easy enchants like lizard fancy/hoodlum, it make a pretty decent weapon. Best off all, repairs, even at 98%, are cheap

Why is it I can't use Meles's Old Furnaces? I have ores and firewood, but she tells me I have to wait... I've waited an entire in-game day. Anyone know why? I even pressed the Refining button, but I only see Anvils and not Furnaces.

u just need 1 or 5 firewood to active the old furnace in either fillia or vales
if im not mistaken, when u talk to Meles the second to last opinion? to use the fire wood then choose how long u want the furnace to last [1min/5min] then just use the furnace.
u can also use the furnace in bangor to refine, just talk to Sion and pay the fee

From what I've read around, a mistake made Filia lose its Old Furnaces while Vales still has its Old Furnaces. A KR update apparently fixes Filia, but who knos how long it'll take...

For ores do Metallurgy at Qilla beach, ranking Metallurgy also gives DEX.
I advise to start the game with a human char then get the giant and elf assistant cards so that you will have a character of each race. Then start the game with giant, make it a melee char. They are the best at the beginning of the game. Then you can do come commerce with the giant and save some gold then buy a kiosk and start trading with other players (the way to make millions of gold). You can pass the gold to your elf char through the bank.
When you are rich you can even directly buy training potions to train and rank up refining. The last time I remember they had changing prices between 350k - 500k each. I suggest to use those pots only for the ranks r6 and higher. Because before that refining can be ranked by ores.
Good luck.

Like this person said, always start out with human so you can get free character of each. However, don't try to raise all of them at once. You're not gonna get very far. Basically this is what I want to ask you: would you rather have solid early game or stronger late game? For the first, you'd want to go human or giant and for the latter, elf.
I wouldn't recommend buying potions until rank 3 or 2. Potions are not worth it, especially when refining is actually easy. I was able to do it without pots and talent/destiny. Hell, you don't even need to fail from rank 5. The only reason I would buy a potion at rank 2 is because if you get the potion cheap enough, it might actually be cheaper than buying the ores.

Just a couple of comments:
Metallurgy gives dex, as mentioned, and has the benefit of being much more likely to give you the rarer ores (copper, silver, gold etc) than mining. Since metallurgy sieves can't be upgraded (unless this was changed) you don't have to worry about the upgrading and expensive repairs of a pickaxe.
Fomor Weapons: Fomor LLBs are fairly decent as mentioned, though if you're already poor I wouldn't recommend spamming too many NPC reforge kits for the elemental reforge mentioned. An alternative is to keep an eye out for the Fomor bows that come pre-enchanted - I carry a level 2 fire elemental fomor elven longbow upgraded for range (for rafting) that has wolf hunter and raven enchanted onto it. I've seen wolf hunter raven fomor leather longbows ready to go in the imp shop. You will find these pre-enchanted weapons in the "limited time only" tab of the commerce imp shops. I would assume that your melee is low ranked, so you'll probably want a "sacrificial" enchant as one of the ones on the bow you find.
Commerce: Windmill is a very helpful skill to have, even if you can't do a lot of damage with it at low level. Assuming you can keep up a cycle of windmill (and defense, probably) you can sweep the two bandits that are raiding your commerce mount as well as keep the two aggro'd bandits off of you. r1 windmill has a very noticeably wider radius of effect r1 windmill is also just an important skill to have ranked early on as it becomes difficult to rank when your combat power level (from having combat skills ranked) gets higher. Enemy behind is an excellent shadow mission to train the "finish several enemies at the same time" requirement (with your party settings to "anyone to finish") and you can adjust the mission difficulty to dial in your CP requirements. At total level ~1000 as an elf ranger, the shadow fighters on INT difficulty were "awful" and therefore perfect for ranking windmill.
