My friend recently started playing Mabinogi about a week or so ago. I told him the easiest class would probably be warrior. And so he's just that. However I need to ask a question regarding his class. I plan on giving him dual swords for his auxiliary tab but in his main I propose a shield. He's going to be very proficient in shield mastery. And now for my question, what weapon type (Blunt, axe, or sword) should I use with his shield? Give me a general why or what for and then suggest a good equipment for a level 120. I will supply his armor and shield so don't worry about that. I just need to know what would be best for him because he just wants to deal heavy damage whilst staying protected. If you can, also provide a good upgrade guide with the suggested weapon type. Thanks!

If he is using a shield, I would recommend a blunt weapon. Probably a mace, because the max damage path also has plenty of balance (238 path has 78 max and 73 balance, making it newbie friendly, however it will have 0 crit). The 250 mod path for mace has 70 max and 45 balance, while having 28 crit. Since the balance formula was changed balance should be easier to come by. There is another weapon with high max damage, which would be the warhammer with the 180-2 mod path (87 max, 12 crit, 0 balance). Your friend would need some dex to use a 0 balance weapon.
The new guard cylinders add 15% balance, coupled with r1 combat mastery gives an instant 30% balance to melee.
As for twin swords, you can't go wrong with the gladius. There is a mod path that gives the highest max damage and keeps balance (300 mod path, 67 max, 59 balance, 0 crit) but it is also the most expensive path (94k gold each).
There are also the twin battle swords with artisan upgrades. I can't really say whether or not they're good for newbies. The absolute best artisan rolls would be 75 luck and strength on each, without the -dex rolls. Of course, you'd need to be very lucky to get a roll like that. Having a pair of high roll battle swords lets you hit hard and crit well (with lucky bonuses as a side effect), but you will probably have nonexistent balance if the swords carry a -dex roll on them.

Like revdb said, glads and maces/warhmmers are good choices.
One nice option if he is willing to commerce a little is the fomor versions of the gladii and warhammer. You get an extra 8 max, min, and balance. Plus you can put the hoodlum enchant on them for an easy 9-12 max and 2-4%crit. And the repairs are cheap, at 98% the warhammer is only 324 ducats per point (only 12 ducats at 90%, and the gladii are 1.1k ducats at 98% (42 ducats at 90%).
Edit: Also, if you're worried about balance, Strider, an enchant from the daily sketching quest for boots adds 10% balance and 16 str. Glass fragment, another sketching quest enchant for clothes, adds 5 max and 5% balance.

I'd say Francisca (axe) although glad does seem like a good option, the fran has a higher crit rate, and if he seems to like the game you could find a cheap r1 fran and if he decides to reforge it, it could make a good weapon.

Don't use glads. The balance revamp already gave enough balance to the newbies, you could just start off right away with 222 broadswords.
For later use, upgrading falcata is a good option if you don't want to spend nx artisan rerolling.
